Scott Mitchell and Deta Hedman are 2016 Red Dragon Welsh Open Men & Women’s Singles Champions

Former World Champion Scott Mitchell is a new name on the Red Dragon Welsh Open Men’s Singles Roll of Honour this year, the 45 year-old England Captain who won Lakeside World Champion championship in 2015 defeated last years’ Welsh Open Winner Glenn Durrant 6 – 5 in the final held at Pontin’s Prestatyn.

Dorset County thrower got off to strong start to the best 11 legs final when he captured the opening two legs in 20 and 14 darts, before Durrant who had won the title 12 months ago with a 6 – 1 victory over …… pulled a leg back with a brilliant 12 dart leg with a 101 check-out, however Mitchell edged further in front with a 17 dart winning leg, before Durrant bounced back to level the match at 3 – 3 with 15 and 16 darters, but Mitchell wasn’t to deterred as moved two legs in front once again by collecting the next legs in 14 and 16 darts to be with one leg of his first ever Welsh title, however his Cleveland opponent wasn’t going give up his title without a fight as stormed back again to level in 16 and 13 darts to take the final to a deciding leg.

Despite not having the advantage of the throw in the deciding leg Mitchell held his never, following two consecutive 140 followed by scores of 92 and 89 he checked out on tops with his 13 dart of the leg to capture the Welsh title and £5,000 first prize with a 32.02 average with Durrant standing on 71 left, he also, recorded over 32 average in this great match.  

Semi-finals saw Mitchell score a 5 legs to 2 win over the reigning World title holder Scott Waites, following winning legs of 14, 15, 15, 18 and 19 darts against Waites efforts of 14 and 15 darts, while Durrant edged out Dave Parletti of Surrey and England 5 – 4 in the deciding leg with a 33.08 average, after successful legs of 13, 14, 11, 12 and 15 darts.

England’s Deta Hedman is the Red Dragon Welsh Open 2016 Women’s Champion, the Oxfordshire and England thrower secured her third Welsh Open title with a 5 – 4 over Sharon Prins of the Netherlands in the final.

However, it was a final that Prins should have won, after the opening two legs were share, Prins taking the first in 21 darts with Hedman levelling in 20 darts, then the Dutch lady took full command of the contest winning the next three legs in 21, 18 and 18 darts to lead 4 – 1 and just missed the bull on 68 take out in next leg and the title, before Deta narrow the scoreline to 4 – 2 with double 10 in 26 darts, which she followed up with a 19 dart leg to narrow the scoreline to one leg.

In the eighth leg Prins missed with 3 darts to clinch the title as Hedman levelled in 20 darts to take the match to the ninth and deciding leg, and once again in the last leg it was the Dutch lady that was in front scoring wise until she came to the double where she failed with 9 darts for the double to capture the title, as Deta clinched the Championship in 26 darts to add to her previous successes of 2011 and 2012.

In the ladies last four matches Deta defeated last years’ runner-up Lorraine Winstanley 4 – 1, while Sharon ended the hopes of her fellow Dutch player Aileen de Graaf of her second Welsh title with a 4 – 2 verdict.

Cavan Phillips of Wales and England’s Beau Greaves won the Red Dragon Welsh Open Youth events – Cavan from Glamorgan won the Boy’s title with a 24.24 average 3 – 0 win over Jack Vincent of England in the Boys final after the same score success against Kieran Bird (Scotland) in the semi-final, while it was 3 – 2 win for Jack over Jordan Boyce (Northern Ireland) in the other Boy’s last four match.

12-year-old Beau Greaves of Yorkshire is the Girls Champion, her 3 – 0 victory over Tamzin Parr (Wales) was achieved with an outstanding 25.05 average, in winning legs of 23, 20 and 17 darts, this came after her 3 – 1 win over Jessica Bonner (Wales) in the semis, the other semi-final saw Tamzin defeat Shannon Hall (England) 3 – 2.

 

The North American pairing of Jim Widmayer and Jeff Smith captured the Men’s Pairs crown at this years’ Red Dragon Welsh Open, the joint USA/Canadian team defeated Yorkshire’s Martin Atkins and Derek Lumley 3 – 1 in the final, after earlier success over Mark Layton & Michael Rowlands (Wales) in the semi-finals and Carl Edwards & Allan Hamilton in their last 8 match.

 

The Ladies Pairs title went to Rhian Griffiths (Wales) & Sue Edwards (England) who scored a 3 – 0 win over England Internationals Lisa Ashton & Claire Brookin in the final. Losing semi-finalist were – Casey Stephenson & Beau Greaves (England) and Anca Zijstra & Ann-Marie Swindles.

 

Lancashire’s Martin Atkins and Sue Cusick won the Mixed Pairs title at Welsh Open, coming back from 2 – 0 down to beat Chris Fidler and Claire Brooking 3 – 2 in the final, after a 3 – 0 win over Andy Chalmers & Claire Cruikshank’s, the other semi-finalist was – Michael Rowlands & Rhian Griffiths.

WELSH INTER-COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS 2016

Glamorgan are both Men and Women’s Pontin’s Welsh Inter County Championship for 2016.

Glamorgan just edged out Gwynedd into second place in the Men’s Championship on the head to head result which Glamorgan won 9 – 6, after both Counties had finished on 57 points from their six matches, in third position was Gwent on 49 points, with Clwyd Fourth with 48 points.

In the Women’s Championship – Glamorgan finished in pole position on 26 points, Gwynedd second 25 points, Gwent third 22 points and Pembrokeshire fourth with 21 points.
