A LOOK BACK IN TIME - 05.11.2003
In a rearranged division three BDO Inter Counties Championship fixture, West Midlands took on Devon at Gilberts Bar, Willenhall. With a defeat in their opening game the Midlands side were looking to kick start their promotion challenge.
The ladies ’B’ started their game by going one down when Jenni Aston lost by 3-2 to Jenny Prout. However, with wins in the remaining fiev games by Debi Hackett, Sara Jukes, Teresa Johnson (18.41 lady of the match), Lynne Reynolds and Teresa Johnston, the hosts recorded a fine 5-1 win. The men’s ’B’ were also in form chalking up a 7-5 win, thanks to Alan Cockayne, Fred Parsons, Lol Frazer, Jamie Parsons, Eddie Price, Ade Arnold and award winner Viv Gould (24.62).
In the ’A’ games, the ladies came from 3-0 down to earn a share of the spoils, Sue Smith (16.34 lady of the match) and anchor lady Janet Hubbard. To complete a successful weekend the men ’s ’A’ also came up winners, an 8-4 verdict with wins from Paddy Johnson, Ian Jones, John Pountney, Martin Tibbetts, Ian Hartland, Peter Wyse, Richard Foster (27.36 match award winner) and Chris Hickman.

In the premier division of the Sheldon and District Winter League Highwood and Saltley Amateur Gardeners were involved in a high scoring affair which saw the former win 6-3. In the game Highwood’s S.Sidwell recorded an eight darts leg, while his team mate S.Kennedy had a 130 checkout. For the opposition N.Clarke had a break of 160 and K.Moloney a 138 finish.
K.Kelly (Glebe Community Centre) chalked up a maximum in division one, as his team won 7-2 at Solihull Borough FC. In the second division Sheldon and Marlboro Club came away from the Gunmakers Arms with a 6-3 win, their G.Wellings registering a 160 break in the process.

The singles title for the Small Heath Summer League has gone to Heartlands Club representative Steve Cain. A final success against Neil Parsonage (Black Horse) gave Cain the crown. Losing semi-finalists were Seamus Gallagher (Great Western) and Ian McLean (Custard House).

The Longwood League has been involved in their divisional Challenge Cup. In division one, after a success in their game with White Lion, Globe defeated Plough and Harrow to book their place in the final, where they will take on the Winning Post, who accounted for Two Gates Club in their semi-final match.
The division two final will be fought out by Jolly Sailor and Queens ’B’, who in turn defeated Queens ’A’ and Three Horse Shoes.
The finals will be staged sometime in April 2004.
In the opening winter season matches there were wins for Winning Post, Red Lion ’A’ and Red Lion ’B’, while White Lion and Two Gates Club finished all square at 4-4. Division two winners were Queens ’B’ and Queens ’A’, with Cue Sports Club and Jolly Sailor ending at four each.

In the West Midlands Super league, Chadsmoor’s men’s team had a convincing 8-1 victory in their home tie with Blakenhall and Wednesbury won 7-2 at Smethwick. There were 6-3 wins for both Tipton and Wednesfield in their away games against respective opponents Warley and Penkridge.
In the ladies league, Wolverhampton and Great Wyrley in turn recorded 4-1 victories over Willenhall and Smethwick. Wolverhampton making it three wins in as many games.
