A Look Back In Time - 1st February 2011

The Festival Inn, Ilkeston Road, Trowell, Nottinghamshire was the setting for the sportsdale.com Christmas Knockout and this the third successive annual event proved to be a huge success with the competition growing in stature every year.

The men’s competition attracted a superb total of 175 and the darts throughout the event were of the highest possible standard. The two eventual finalists were Jamie Caven and Mensur Suljovic, neither of them dropping a leg before the quarter finals stage. For Caven there were wins against Stuart Biggs, Dave Smith-Hayes, Malcolm Marks, Gary Fenn and Mick Todd, while Suljovic accounted for Dave Ladley, Dean Greenwood, Jamie Gemmell and Stuart Lilly.

The quarter finals saw the games increased to the best of seven legs and Caven was involved in a very close 4-3 affair with Brian Kirk but got the vital deciding leg. Suljovic meanwhile had a more comfortable 4-1 success against Nigel Staniland.

The semi finals were the best of nine legs, Jamie Caven being paired against Andy Hamilton. Caven was in fine form averaging 99.37 in his 5-1 victory and notching a maximum in the process plus a twelve darts leg. Hamilton, despite the scoreline was not a bystander as he recorded a very respectable 83.48 average. Mensur Suljovic chalked up a similar 5-1 victory in his game with Andrew Gilding, the averages below that of the first semi final as Suljovic recorded 87.15 and Gilding 72.30.

Everyone was now geared up for a cracking best of eleven legs final and they were not disappointed. Caven notched three maximums, seventeen tons and a twelve darts leg to his opponent’s one maximum, nine tons and 3x140’s, his best leg being 14 darts. The most important statistic was the 6-2 result which went to Caven, his average 96.77 to Suljovic’s 85.95.

As champion Caven received £1,000 and Suljovic £400, each of the losing semi finalists picked up £125 and the losing quarter finalists £50. In the ladies event it was Sarah Brent who was the top lady on the day. Sarah lifted the title with a final win over Tracey Johnson and collected £80 plus a trophy, Tracey received £40 and a trophy, the losing semi finalists each picked up £20.

News hot off the press is that due to the huge success of the Sportsdale opens there is another planned for the 26th March. Further details of this will be printed in next months Darts World.

Congratulations to Warwickshire’s Prakash Jiwa who in the Doubles Knockout organised by Warwickshire Darts Organisation at Bishopsgate Club, Coventry not only retained his title with partner Matt Edgar but also went on to win the singles event. The winning duo had a final success over Nigel Heydon and Steve Hine, the match going the full distance with both sides notching the big scores, but it was the sharper finishing of Jiwa and Edgar that won them the top prize of £180.

Jiwa made it a very profitable Christmas period when with a win over Nigel Heydon in the singles final he collected a further £300.

Thanks go to Paul Bodsworth and Les Ball who both worked tirelessly to keep the games flowing and also Maria for running the “Footy” cards.

The 501 Presentation Night Knockout was on the agenda for the Small Heath League and with a final win over Eddie Martin (Devils Club) it was Neil Parsonage from the Emerald Club who lifted the title. Losing semi finalists were, Eddie Bullock (Red Hill Tavern) and Paul Brown (Custard House).

The Gulp League played off their Doubles Knockout, in the opening round Steve Moon and Eddie Kennedy scored 435 with their first four throws, but then lost out to eventual Champions Colin Wyatt and Matt Cooper, Colin hitting the only maximum of the night.

In the final, as it had been throughout the evening, it was the sharper finishing of Wyatt and Cooper that gave them their victory over Rob McConnell and Chris Stokes.
