The first round of the League Cup was on the agenda for the Harborne and District Summer League and a total of five maximums were recorded in the round. Amazingly four of the 180’s were hit by players on the losing side, T.Parsons (Raven) lost 6-3 to Smethwick Labour Club, A.O’Sullivan (Cock Inn) lost 7-2 to the Hillyfields, S.Hemus (W.C.WMC) also lost by 7-2, to the George and L.Scullion (Travellers Rest) who went out of the cup 6-3 to Avenue Social. Mark Hollyoake (Midland Red) was the only player to register a maximum and finish on the winning side, Red beat Ladywood Social 6-3. Ironically Ladywood’s R.Kinsella had a 160 break and his team lost.

Steve Dwyer’s good start to the Belgrave Social Individual League continues as he chalked up another three wins against Terry Clinton, Derek Mountjoy and Scott Mitton, again all of them 3-0 to make it six wins without conceding a single leg. Now on 30 points Dwyer is three clear of second placed Mick Chater, who despite hitting two maximums suffered a 2-1 reversal at the hands of Mark Slater and then, with another 180 won by the same margin in his fixture with Pete Guesford. Chater has also played two more games than Dwyer.

Other players to hit 180’s this week were Gordon Clinton, Derek Mountjoy, Simon Winters, Adam Duffy, Steve Hine and Mark Slater.

The Sheldon and District Summer League began their new season and group three’s Lea Hall Sports and Social got the campaign off in real style by beating Shard End RBL Flights 7-1. R.Cheshire hit two maximums for Shard End.

In addition to the new season getting underway, also on their fixture card was the first two rounds of the Dennis Houlders Trophy. Winning their way through to the next round are, Hen and Chickens, Sheldon Heath Dukes, Saltley Amateur Gardeners ’A’, Iron Horse Flights, Saltley Amateur Gardeners ’B’, Three Horse Shoes ’B’ and Bradford Flights.

The Winter league will be holding their AGM at Lea Hall Sports and Social on Sunday 29th June at 10.30am. There are still vacancies for the forthcoming season, which will begin on the 4th September. For further information contact either Alan Blythe on 0121-748-7548 or Dave Sutton, who can be contacted on 0121-444-4693.

Another league to get their new season underway is the Aston League. In division one Heartlands kicked off with a bang as they recorded a massive 18-2 win over Aston Social, while Brookvale Sinners, with a 18 from J.Collins had a 12-9 win against Highcroft.

Yew Tree were division two’s top scorers with a 14-7 victory over King Edward, K.Clarke hitting a maxi for the winners. KCA and Mitre Magic were involved in a close game with the latter just getting the 11-10 verdict.

----------------------------------

What better way to finish the season than with a tremendous maximum checkout of 170. That is exactly what Hobs Meadow’s Paul Higgins did in the final fixture against local rivals Hobs Meadow Mixes. One player was a little bit sickened by the feat and that was Richard Taylor, who had held the highest finish of 161 for most of the season was actually playing for Hobs Meadow Mixes. The 6-3 result also went in favour of Hobs Meadow and that gave them the third place by just one leg of average over the Highwood. Highwood Arrows won the title with Red Arrows runners up.

Two players hit maximums in their final games, and ironically both finished on the losing side. Pat Holmes (Cock and Hens) was one of those players, seeing her team lose 6-3 to the Glades, and Terry Price (Harvester) the other, Stechford Social their victors.
