The BDO Inter Counties season gets underway this coming weekend and Warwickshire’s first premier division fixture of the campaign is a home game against London. This season ‘A’ tram games will again be staged at the Belgrave Sports and Social Club, Tamworth, while the ‘B’ matches will be played at the Bishopsgate Club, Coventry.

For the West Midlands life goes on in division four. Their first encounter is also a home game, taking on Pembrokeshire at this season’s new home venue Gilberts Bar and Restaurant, Willenhall. The quarter finals of the KO Cup were on the agenda for the Harborne 401 Summer League. Second division’s Hobsons Choice provided one of the upsets with a 5-4 win at first division’s Bartley Green Social Club. The better finishing of Hillyfields saw them account for Ladywood Social with a 6-3 scoreline. Midland Red chalked up a 7-2 win at the Cock, Rubery, despite a 180 and 160 break from the home side’s R.Ellis. Red’s C.Steadman also notched a 180 in an eleven darts leg team mate G.Smith also recorded a similar eleven darts game.

There were shocks at the top of the Minworth Social Individual League as all top three players, Peter Allen, John Ainsworth and Mark Hollyoake all dropped games. Leader Allen, on 148 points had a 3-0 win against Mick Bagley then lost 2-1 to Lance Thompson. Ainsworth, in second place on 130 points suffered a crushing 3-0 defeat at the hands of Alan Mayell, while reigning champion and currently third in the table Hollyoake went down 2-1 to Mick Bagley, leaving him on 129 points with two games in hand on Allen. In the battle of the ladies Lesley Newcombe got the better of Dawn Barnes with a 3-0 result.

In the semi-finals of the Sheldon and District Summer League’s Mrs F.Richman Trophy Saltley Amateur Gardeners had a resounding 6-1 victory over Malt Shovel, E.Davison offering Shovel’s only resistance. The other semi saw Castle Vale Residents Association beat Iron Horse 5-2. Saltley continued their fine form in the final where they raced to a 5-0 lead through Neil Clarke, Steve Winters, Alan Caddick, Tony Randell and Kevin Moloney. They eventually won the title by 6-1, Phil Henderson adding another to the tally, while Carl Betteridge was Vale’s only winner.

Custard House ‘A’ recorded a fine 5-4 win in the Small Heath Summer League, when they beat leaders Saltley Flights, reducing their deficit to two points. Black Horse won their game against Sheldon Heath Flights by 6-3 and are now level on points with Saltley, both have 18 points.
The league’s next meeting is on the 5th October.

A top of the table clash in the Longwood Summer League between leaders Red Lion ‘A’ and third placed Dolphin, saw the latter gain a 5-3 victory, Lion’s first defeat of the season in fourteen outings. However, they stay on top of the pile with 23 points, just three more than both Queens Head and Dolphin. Queens Head finished all square at four each with Queens ‘B’.
All secretaries should note that the 15th September is the date for the league’s next meeting.
