A Look Back in Time - Alan Towe 1998-09-02

Wenley, leaders in division one of the Harborne 401 Summer League, did their cause no harm at all when in their latest fixture at home to Brook ‘A’ they chalked up a 7-2 victory. Second placed Raven kept their challenge going with a similar result at Avenue Social.

K.Harding was in top form for Monarch hitting 140,125,126,2x100 plus recording a twelve darts leg as his team roared to a 6-3 win against Highlander for whom J.Titley scored a maximum.

In division two leaders Hillyfields proved too good for Travellers Rest and ran out 8-1 winners. Meanwhile Bartley Green Social, who are also in contention for league honours were involved in a high scoring affair with Stonehouse, a match that included no fewer than 32 tons or over, the former gaining the 6-3 advantage. In the same division Vine won 9-0 and Village Stump 8-1 against respective opponents Raven Ladies and Highlander Ladies.

No less than seven maximums were hit in the Sheldon and District Summer League this week. On the treble twenty trail were J.Toney (Sheldon Heath S.C.), B.Packer, A.Caddick (E.B.A.H.A), C.Hall (Three Horseshoes), M.Morgan (Kinghurst L.C), F.W.Goldbey (Malt Shovel) and B.Moore (British Telecom).

On the league front Three Horseshoes were the weeks biggest winners defeating Heathway 7-1. They were also successful in the quarter finals of the league’s Mrs F.Richman Trophy, beating E.B.A.H.A. 4-3. Sheldon Dukes and Punchbowl won by the same scoreline in their games against respective opponents Staff Social and Kierans. 5-2 was the best win of the round going to Silver Wings in their tie with Great Western. The last four teams will play off on finals at Lea Hall Legion on Thursday 3rd September with a prompt 8-15pm start.

Old Wharf had a good 7-2 win over Heartlands in division one of the Small Heath Summer League thanks to wins from R.Goldbey, T.Frost, G.Brown, D.Harrop, J.Leadbetter, C.Betteridge and M.O’Donnell. However division two provided the highlight as Saltley Flights D.Higgs recorded a 116 break, a 180 and a great nine darts leg helping his team to a close 5-4 success against Sheldon Flights.

The South West Birmingham Clubs Summer League have been involved in their singles knockouts. Taking the men’s title with a final victory over Keith Mason (Stirchley United W.M.C.) was Greenlands representative Les Fearn.

For the first time this season the singles competition was split into two for a mens and ladies event. Vicky Edwards (Irish Centre) gained the distinction of being the first name on the winners silverware as she accounted for Barbara Andrews (Bournbrook) in the final.

The leagues mixed doubles competition will be staged at the Bournbrook & Selly Oak Sports & Social Club on Tuesday 29th September commencing at 7-45 sharp.

Tyseley W.M.C. had a close 5-4 win over the Plume & Feathers in the Acocks Green Summer League while Brewer & Baker romped to a convincing 8-1 victory against Tyseley Staff.
