A Look Back in Time - Alan Towe 1999-06-23
The Forest of Arden Summer League ‘A’division began with something of a shock for Hobs Meadow when, as in the winter league, they lost to Hobs Meadow Mixes. A 152 break by M.Gorste was not enough to stop Mixes romping to a 6-4 victory. 6-4 proved to be the ‘A’ divisions biggest win, Harvester were another team to record such a success in their encounter at the Highwood, while Red Arrows and Silver Wings had to be content to share the spoils in a 5-5 result on the formers board.
In division ‘B’ Cock and Hens stormed to a 7-3 win at the Fordbridge Social, but in the local derby, Heart of England ‘A’ versus Heart of England ‘B’ the match finshed all square at five each.

It was maximums galore in the Sheldon and District Summer League with no less than seven such scores recorded in the latest round of fixtures. In group one W.Mathews (Three Hoseshoes) notched tow 180’s, P.Henderson (E.B.A.H.A) and T.Whitehouse (Smiths Wood) both hitting one. In group two B.Walton (C.C.C), group four I.McLean (Gables) and group six H.Hodgetts (Lea Hall Mixed) were also players to find the three treble twenties.

In the Small Heath Summer League S.Weir was the only player to win for Saltley Flights as they went down 8-1 at the Gables, N.Parsonage hit a couple of tons and broke with 160 for the hosts. D.Carter was another sole winner as his team, BCA, lost 8-1 to Saltley Gardeners. Other winners were Sheldon Flights, who with a close 5-4 result accounted for McDwyers.

A 14-7 win over Ward End has seen Northfield move up to second place in the Irish Centre Four a Side Ladies League. Northfield with 89 points are four ahead of Handsworth who forfeited their number two spot as a result of their 16-5 defeat at the hands of leaders Selly Park who have 110 points. Bottom of the table Perry Barr’s miserable season continued as they lost 15-6 to Sheldon.
Northfield’s Vicky Edwards was top of the scorer’s this week as she chalked up a maximum.

Tyseley WMC extended their unbeaten run in the Acocks Green Summer League to four games as they were awarded a 5-0 walkover, the Moonraker only able to field four players. Langley Hall had a close 5-4 win over the Railway while Brewers Arms recorded a comfortable 7-2 victory against Robin Hood.

Vicky Edwards was the only player in the top five of the Birmingham Ladies Double Top League to win both of her fixtures this week. Vicky joint fourth with Pat Bradshaw had wins against Jean Cotton and Marion Walker while Bradshaw followed her win over Jeanette James with a defeat at the hands of Janet Dudley. Dudley meanwhile in joint second place with Angie Bourne went down 3-0 in her encounter with Bourne then returned to winning ways against Janet Dudley. Angie Bourne lost her second match 2-1 to Marie Glasgow.
At the top of the table Joyce Webster suffered a 2-1 reversal against Marie Glasgow and she too, like her rivals bounced back with a win, 2-1 at the expense of Mo Doherty.

Kings Norton RBL COBS had something of a surprisingly large win in division one of the South West Birmingham Clubs Summer League when they beat fourth in the table Hawthorns 7-0. Prior to the match Hawthorns were undefeated in four outings. J.Fitzpatrick (Selly Oak Flights) broke with 160 in his team’s 5-2 away win at Brunswick. Stirchley United WMC remain in pole position with a 6-1 victory at Caledonian Corks, making it six wins in as many games.
Austin Sports and Social Club, in division two, have a similar record to Stirchley, their latest success being a 5-2 home win over Tascos Flights. In division three two teams Tascos ‘B’ and the Grange share the number one spot. Both teams won 4-3, Tascos winning at Moseley All Services and Grange at home to Solihull Municipal.
