A Look Back in Time - Alan Towe 1999-07-14

Bell Inn leaders of division one in the Harborne 401 Summer League maintained their winning ways with a convincing 7-2 victory at Hobsons Choice. Second placed Bartley Green Social Club kept up the pressure on the top team with their 6-3 success at the Plough. P.Bielauskas (B.G.S.C.) recorded a 160 break.

It’s as you were in division two with Greenlands still holding on to pole position after their 7-2 win at Bartley Green Social Flights. A 180 from B.Godwin (Travellers Rest) was not enough toe avoid a 5-4 defeat as his team went down at home to Avenue Social in a closely fought contest.

In division three it was easy pickings for top team Punchbowl and Fairfield as they romped to 9-0 wins against Raven Ladies and Highlander Ladies respectively. Fairfield proved to be in extremely good form as J.Ward chalked up a maximum break of 170, J.Green a maximum score of 180 and D.Tromans a very creditable 160 break.

Maximums galore in the Sheldon and District Summer League as no fewer than seven players found the three treble twenties this week. They were T.Randell (Sheldon Heath Social), S.Boston (Shard End Social), J.Whitehouse, F.Ensell (Iron Horse), J.Evans (Stechford Social), D.Harris (Heathway) and A.Cooper (Yardley Colts). Biggest win of the week’s fixtures went Group Two’s Stechford Social who had an 8-0 home win over Chestnuts. Group One’s Shard End Social were not far behind with their 7-1 victory against Smiths Wood.

----------------------------------

Bournbrook Flights produced something of a shock result in division two of the South West Birmingham Clubs Summer League when they won 4-3 away to the Dingle Social. Previously Dingle had won five of their six fixtures and a maximum from Terry Cliff was not enough to sway the verdict, not even Terry’s verdict as he lost his encounter with Colin Twigg.

In division one Stirchley United WMC continued their push for honours with a 5-2 win over Northfield Conservative Club. Brunswick had a convincing 6-1 success at Caledonian Corks in division one while in division three Solihull Municipal went one better with a 7-0 whitewash of Moseley C.C.

----------------------------------

Tyseley WMC suffered their first defeat of the current campaign in the Acocks Green Summer League when they lost at home 5-4 to Shirley Legion. Shirley won the match in the penultimate game when Dave Hesketh beat Dennis Stokes 2-1. Journeys End maintained their challenge for the title with a 5-4 home win against Brewers Arms. In the other matches Robin Hood won 6-3 at Britannia Arrows, Railway Club won by the same margin at the Moonraker, the home team only able to field five players and Langley Hall were awarded a walk over as the Plume failed to turn out.

----------------------------------

There was a top of the table clash in the Irish Centre Four a Side Ladies League with runaway leaders Selly Park taking on second placed Northfield. The result was a 13-8 win for Selly Park giving them a total of 147 points and leaving Northfield 23 points adrift but holding on to their second position. Perry Barr and Handsworth both had 11-10 wins against respective opponents Ward End and Sheldon.

----------------------------------

With only a couple of weeks matches remaining in the Birmingham Ladies Double Top League, reigning champion Joyce Webster has a nine points lead over her rivals. Joyce won both of her latest games, the first against second placed Angie Bourne by 3-0, the second a 2-1 win over Pat Bradshaw. Angie bounced back in her other match beating Julie James 2-1 in a high scoring encounter. Janet Dudley, one point behind Angie Bourne, on 53, slipped up as she lost 201 to Vicky Edwards before recovering to beat Marie Glasgow by the same score.
