A Look Back in Time - Alan Towe 2000-05-10

Midland Red were in top form in division one of the Harborne 401 Summer League as they raced to a 9-0 victory at home to Hillyfields. On the ball for the hosts was P.Clifford with a 160 break and M.Hollyoake who scored a 180.Ladywood Social were not far behind Midland Red as they accounted for Stonehouse with an 8-1 result while leaders George had a 6-3 away win at the greenlands.

In division two Lickey Banker and Village Stump had 5-4 wins over respective opponents Coronation Club and the Plough. Top scores in the third division were the Cock Inn who had an 8-1 home success against Stonehouse Ladies.

The Harborne and District Winter League were involved in the third round of their Skipp Cup. A 160 break by S.Riddick helped Bartley Green Social Club to a resounding 13-2 victory over the Quinborne. Midland Red were also comfortable winners as they took out Hobsons Choice with a 12-3 result. Ladywood Social made their way into the next round with a close 8-7 win at the expense of the George.

In the Consolation Cup there were wins for Bartley Green Social Flights, Bugle Horn and Hillyfields ‘A’ who beat in turn Highlander Ladies, Village Stump and Coronation Club.

Bagot Arms continued their impressive run in the Amber Windows League with a 9-0 whitewash against the Woodman. K.C.A. were also 9-0 winners in their fixture with Aston Social. Despite a 111 finish and a nine darts leg by C.Weston, Yew Tree Colts still lost 6-3 at home to King Edward 7th whose G.Nicholls chalked up a maximum.

In the other games Heartlands and Oscott Social both won 7-2 against Seventh Trap and Lyndhurst. Mitre won a high scoring home game against Vauxhall Social by a close 5-4.

After two weeks matches in the Bass Breweries sponsored Minworth Individual League there are three players on fifteen points, Tony Randall, Jason Gilbert and Rob South, all having played four games. Reigning champion Alan Grainger is currently in tenth position, but only two points adrift of the leading pack. Three players remain undefeated Mark Elkin, Ian Humphries, who have played three games and Chris Packer who has played two.

Congratulations go to Wayne Mathews of the Three Horse Shoes who has won the Sheldon and District League Singles title. Playing at Lea Hall RBL Mathews took on Tony Randall (Saltley Amateur Gardeners) in round one and won 2-1. He won 2-0 in the quarter and semi finals against Niall McCrave (Dovecote) and Steve Harding (St Annes). Wayne’s final oponent was Mackadown Social’s John Rudd who with a 100 break won the first leg of the final. Wayne replied with a 142 break and a score of 137 to level the match and then went on to win the decider for a 2-1 success.

12-9 was the popular result in the Irish Centre Four a Side Ladies League as Northfield beat Selly Park and newcomers Yardley accounted for Sutton, even though Sutton’s Chris Glover hit 7x100 and her team mate Beattie Powell scored a maximum, in addition to 3x100 and 120.

The Small Heath League got it’s new season off to a flying start this week with 7-2 wins from Sheldon Heath Flights and McDwyers against respective opponents Red Hill and the Bear. Despite losing, the highlight for red Hill was the fabulous 140 break by Gloria Lightwood, which in the opening week was the league’s best break.

J.Randell (Custard House) provided the week’s highest checkout as he finished on 141 in his team’s 6-3 win against Victoria Social Club. Black Horse were the league’s other winners as they defeated Saltley Flights 5-4.
