A Look Back in Time - Alan Towe 2001-01-03

As the first half of the the Forest of Arden Winter League draws to a close Hobs Meadow with a 7-2 home win over Poachers Pocket head the table on 20 points from eleven games. Silver Wings, two points adrift of Hobs are in second place, had a similar margin victory over bottom of the league Warwick Aero, Tom Keating’s 180 helping them on their way. Third placed Mackadown Social suffered a surprising 6-3 home defeat at the hands of Hobs Meadow Mixes, this only Social’s third reversal of the campaign and leaves them two points behind Wings, but two ahead of Red Arrows who with a close 5-4 verdict accounted for the Old Bill and Bull.

The final of the Ladies Singles Knockout, in the Small Heath Winter League was an all Red Hill affair between Jean Forde and Gloria Lightwood. Taking the title for an amazing fifth consecutive season was Jean Forde.

There were three seperate winners in the league’s Delegates Knockout. In game one Tony Randell (Custard House) won the tilte with Mick Nunn (Saltley Flights) the runner up. Kevin Maloney (Custard House) won game two with Red Hill’s Dave Bourne losing in the final. Making it a hat trick of wins for the Custard House was Tom Webster who won the third game with Arthur Forde, representing the Red Hill losing in the final.

The winning numbers for the league’s “Dartto Game” are 1st £45 No 42 (Serial No AH732625), 2nd £26 No 104 (Serial No AH864265), 3rd £18 No 52 (Serial No AG213157).

After just two fixtures have been completed in division two of the Longwood Winter League only three teams, Two Gates Club, Railway and Wilnecote Club remain undefeated. A 7-2 away win over Hopwas Club puts Two Gates in pole position, while Railway’s 7-1 victory at Royal Oak leaves them one leg short of Gates tally in second spot. Wilnecote Club are third a further two legs adrift of Railway.

The Sheldon and District Winter League will be playing Round Two of the Punch Bowl and the Preliminary Round of their Sheldon Shield tomorrow (4th January). The draw for the Punch Bowl is Three Horse Shoes v Silver Wings, EBAHA v Mackadown Social, Glebe Community Centre v Heathway, Iron Horse v Lea Hall RBL, Journeys End v Fordbridge Social, Shard End Social v Lyndon Arms, Stechford Social v Saltley Amateur Gardeners, Sheldon Dukes v Olton RBL. The Sheldon Shield ties are, Monica v Tipsy Gent, Millhouse v British Telecom Club, Banbury Club v KDLC, Lea Hall RBL Mixed v BCS Club.
