A West Midlands Round Up By Alan Towe

With the domestic fixture done and dusted the Sheldon and District Winter League have been winding down their season with various knockouts, two of which have been the singles and doubles knockouts. Dunky’s Boys supplied two of the last four players in the singles with Bob Nixon beating Terry Webster (East Birmingham Allotment Holders Association) 2-1 while his team mate John Sidwell lost out 2-0 to Greville Arms representative Luis Barberan. The final saw Nixon once again win 2-0 with Barberan runner up. As in the singles Dunky’s Boys again had two in the last four and again only one made it to the final as Andy Hutchings and Pete Yardley beat Brad Evans and Matt Morgan (Pavillions) 2-0 and Jason Jennings and Simon Edwards lost 2-0 to Noel Hall and Shaun Hoccom (Maggies). The final went the full three legs distance with Hutchings and Yardley taking the title leaving Hall and Hoccom runners up. Players in the Erdington Red Lion Double Top League have played all 52 of their fixtures and taking the title with 129 points was Will Naylor who finished sixteen points ahead of runner up Dean Bayliss. What a season Naylor has had as not only did he clinch the main title but he also had the highest finish of 154, least darts which was 7 and in addition to all that hit the most tons, a total of 97. The highest break of 160 was recorded by both Dean Bayliss and John Frost while Frost also shared the most 180’s with Matthew Cain, both players hitting no fewer than 4. Being as the league pay out for every place in the table there will be two play off’s as Lewis Bayliss and Jim Frost both finished on 103 points and Clive Austin and Lee Austin ended on 67 points. Due to the fact that Dave Fisher was unable to complete his final game he had to be withdrawn from the Shirley Premier League and all of his results deducted, so without a single dart being thrown the league concluded their season last week. The outcome of all the adjustments was that Paul Higgins won the league title with 69 points just two more than runner up Phil Thomas who in turn was only one point to the good on third placed Tom Bent. With no fixtures to play a knockout was organised and after the early rounds the last four games saw Luke Symmons beat Ken Hopton 5-3 and Mark Gwalchmai win 5-2 against Tom Bent. In the final Gwalchmai handed out a 6-0 whitewash to Symmons to take the top prize. The Consolation Competition final was an all Thomas affair as after Chris Thomas beat Mick Bown 3-0 in the semis and Andy Thomas won 3-2 against Steve Harper, the two Thomas’s then squared up to each other for the title. The final went the full five legs distance with Andy just getting the edge on Chris for the win. The Forest of Arden Winter League have been engaged in the semi finals of their Mini League in which league champions Journeys End Flights had a narrow 14-13 win over Highwood KB who ended the season in third place. League runners up Journeys End handed out a huge 27-0 defeat to Greville Arrows to set up a final between the league’s two top teams and local Journeys End rivals. There were two maximums in the semis J.Webster for Journeys End and S.Edwards for Journeys End Flights. Misfits have lost pole position in the Winmau Centre Monday Night League after losing 25-23 to fourth in the table Bloody Good Shot Sir! With 495 points Misfits are now 19 short of new leaders Above Average who had the league’s biggest possible win 48-0 against Make Mine A Double. The Untouchables remain in third place, a 33-15 win over Keep It In The Family giving them 494 points, just one short of Misfits but 20 off the leaders. The Pip Club League played off the final of their division one Challenge Cup in which the league’s top two teams Queens Head and The Office faced up to each other. The result was a win for The Office who are currently second in the Main League table two points behind Queens Head with a game in hand. Both teams chalked up a maximum Steve Ross for Queens Head and Daz Jones for The Office. The C’s Club, Chelmsley Wood laid on a knockout and attracted an encouraging initial 25 players. There was high scoring throughout the event, the semi-finals seeing Jake Webster hit a 180 in his 3-2 win over Daniel Lee, Lee also notching a maximum while in the other semi Neil Parsonage hit two maximums in his 3-2 win over Mark Birch who also hit two 180’s. Carrying on with top score in the final Parsonage hit another two maximums to win 4-1 against Webster who hit one 180. Warwickshire’s youth teams played their penultimate fixture of the season away to Merseyside, another fantastic performance from the Bears cubs running out 10-5 winners with wins in all three sections the fifth time they have achieved this this season. The win made it seven wins in as many games, the final fixture being an away game against Clwyd on the 20th May. Winners for the Under 18’s were Xander Meek, Matthew Cain, Joe Pitchford-Morris, Will Rattigan and Mackenzie Nixon, for the ladies it was Courtney Hine and Lucy Keyte while Jake Liggins, Charlie Symons and Lewis Bayliss all won for the Under 21’s. Erdington Club took their unbeaten run in division one of the Sutton and District Summer League to four games with a 6-3 win over Drakes Drum and being as second in the table The Boat had a bye have now opened up a two points lead. Woodside move into the top position as a result of former leaders Netherton Cricket Club losing their home game 5-2 to Brickmakers Arms ‘A’ who move up from third to second as the Cricket Club drop to third place, all of the top three teams are on 29 points. New Talbot move off the foot of the table after recording their first win in twelve games, a 6-2 success at Railway. Due to their fixture against The Crown being cancelled Dudley Ex Serviceman’s Club have lost their position at the top of the Netherton Thursday Night League table to Riddins Tavern who won 5-4 at home against third placed Bulls Head. Riddins and the Ex Serviceman’s Club are both on 18 points, three more than Bulls Head and fourth placed Townsend Club who had a 5-4 home win over Fairfield. Tipton Sports took their points tally to 28 from fifteen games in the Hilltop Friendly Tuesday Night League when they won 6-1 against Merry-Go-Round ‘B’. Not such a good week for Waggon and Horses as they lost their home game against The Vine 6-1 and also their second place as they dropped to fourth. Taking over from Waggon and Horses is Island Inn who are four points behind the leaders after their 6-1 at Wonder, third in the table Dewdrop ‘A’ are also four off the top following their close 4-3 home win over Horseley Tavern. Brickmakers Arms have gone two points clear at the top of the Cradley Tuesday Night League after their 5-4 win at fourth placed Netherton Cricket Club ‘A’ and the 5-4 defeat of Bulls Head by third placed Wheatsheaf who now take over the number two spot from Bulls Head on average, Bulls Head have a game in hand on Wheatsheaf.
