A West Midlands Round Up By Alan Towe

Warwickshire’s latest BDO Inter County Championships Premier Division fixture was an away game against Cambridgeshire which resulted in an 18-18 draw their first draw since they finished all square playing away against Hampshire in February 2012. It was a good weekend for the men’s teams but not too good for the ladies as the ‘B’ side lost 4-2 with Caroline Pike taking the match award for her 20.04 average with Donna Pinch the only other winner. The ladies ‘A’ team went down 5-1 with team captain Sue Gulliver the sole winner taking the lady of the match award for a 21.11 average. The men’s ‘B’ team recorded their second win of the campaign, four wins in each half of the game giving them an 8-4 result. Man of the match for the ‘B’ was Ian Shaw who after losing the first leg to Gary Robertson went on to win 4-2, his winning legs of 16,18,20 and 15 darts giving him a 27.63 average. To round off the weekend the men’s ‘A’ team chalked up their fourth win in six games, a 7-5 result with Nigel Heydon newly selected to play for England the man of the match with a superb average of 30.83 as he beat Ashley Coleman 4-0 in the opening game in 15,16,18 and 16 darts. After a 3-1 win over Steve Heeks, Chris Thomas despite hitting two maximums was held to a 2-2 draw by Sean Talbot, nevertheless his results were good enough to take him to the top of the Shirley Premier League table with 36 points from 13 games. Moving up one place to second is Dave Heighway with 33 points from 12 games his latest games seeing him win 4-0 against Mark Henderson then finish all square at two each with Jack Nason. Antony Daly in third place is only two points behind Heighway but he has played 13 games, he came back from a 4-0 defeat by Jack Nason to win 3-1 against Mark Henderson. Former leader Andy Thomas didn’t play in week six and drops to fifth place on 29 points, seven short of leader Thomas but now with two games in hand. Just two results for division one of the South Birmingham League which saw leaders Erdington Members Club boost their title hopes with an 8-1 win at The Raven to put them four points ahead of second placed Crown at Shard End who have a game in hand on Erdington. The other game played saw third placed Coleshill Social win their home tie with Mackadown Social 5-4. In the second division Iron Horse made it seven wins in as many games when they won 5-4 at home against The Dog to keep them two points to the good on second placed C’s Arrows who have played the same seven games as The Dog. Will Naylor continues to dominate the Erdington Red Lion Double Top League although he has had his lead reduced to eight points as after his 3-0 win over Clive Austin he suffered a 2-1 defeat by joint third in the table John Frost. Second placed Dean Bayliss managed to reduce the deficit as he beat Stuart Larvin 3-0 and then won 2-1 against fifth in the table Jim Frost. The table now reads Naylor top with 75 points, Dean Bayliss second on 67 then Lewis Bayliss and John Frost share third placed both players having 63 points and are level on average. Lewis Bayliss lost his opening game against Matthew Cain 2-1 then recovered to beat Stuart Larvin 3-0. The Winmau Centre Thursday Night Champions League in the Wolverhampton Indoor Community Sports Arean has now completed its fixture list and four times champion Mick Baker ended the campaign on 147 points eighteen more than runner up Tony Randell in his first season in the league. Baker will now receive not only the winner’s top prize money but also for a fourth consecutive season the twelve months sponsorship deal supplied by Winmau. What a climax to end the Stourbridge and District Monday Night League’s season as the top two teams and local rivals Ten Arches ‘A’ and Ten Arches ‘B’ played each other. The result was a 6-3 win for the ‘B’ team to give them the title with 78 points losing just three of their 42 fixtures. The ‘A’ side finished as runners up with 74 points four more than their nearest rivals Gate ‘B’ who won their final game at home against Bird (Wordsley) 5-4. It was cup week in the Four Oaks and District League the Richard Winslow pairs sponsored by K & B Installations, an individual doubles knockout played at the Red Lion, Erdington. A total of 38 pairs contested the title with Bishop Vesey having three representative teams in the quarter finals where they all made their exits. Last season’s semi finalists R.Hawker and S.Paling and last year’s winners K.Reynolds and K.Deeley once again made the semi-finals and were joined by K.Shorthouse and C.Turnbull plus M.Partridge and J.Prince. The first of the semis saw Shorthouse and Turnbull lose 2-0 to Reynolds and Deeley while Hawker and Paling won 2-1 against Partridge and Prince. In the final Reynolds and Deeley beat Hawker and Paling 3-0, to lift the trophy for a second successive year. Week four of the Brierley Hill Monday Night League brought together the league’s top two teams, leaders Bulls Head (Netherton) and second placed Dudley Ex Serviceman’s Club. Despite home advantage Bulls Head lost out 5-4 and drop to third in the table while the winners Dudley Ex Serviceman’s Club remain in second place with an undefeated eight points. Taking over in pole position is Dudley Sports ‘A’ who like the Ex Serviceman’s Club have also won all four games the latest of which was a 6-3 success away to Lamp Tavern to put them just one leg of average to the good on the Ex Serviceman’s Club. It’s as you were at the top of the Shirley and District Monday Night League with the top three teams Highwood, Dunky’s Boys and Red Lion all recording 8-1 wins against respective opponents Solihull Sports and Social Club, Shirley Golf Club and Sharman’s Cross. Highwood on 32 points top the table with Dunky’s Boys second on 30 points, just one leg of average keeping them above Red Lion. Journeys End Lions played away to second placed Holy Souls in week thirteen of the Camp Hill League and it turned out to be an unlucky thirteen as they lost 4-3, their first defeat of the season so far. Nevertheless Journeys remain in pole position but their lead is now reduced to six points and Holy Souls also have a game in hand. However it was a good week for bottom of the table Station Wagon as they registered only their second win in thirteen as they returned from Devil’s Club with the 4-3 verdict. There was a first win in five games for The Vine in the Hilltop Friendly Tuesday Night League when they won their home fixture against Horseley Tavern 5-2. Nothing separates the top two teams Tipton Sports and Wagon and Horses level on points and average after Tipton won 5-2 against Island Inn and Wagon and Horses beat Ivy Bush by the same margin. Third and fourth placed Dewdrop ‘A’ and New Talbot are two points off the top and in turn won 5-2 against Dewdrop ‘B’ and 4-3 away to Rising Sun. Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances Matt Tedstone has had to drop out of division two of the Yeltz Bar Tuesday Night Singles League and replacing him was Chris Singleton whose first game and 5-0 win was against his son Dan. Leading the division is Rob Smith with 18 points from 4 games with second placed Tommy Johnson on 13 points from 3 games. Smith in an end of evening catch up game against Neil Smith had an impressive 5-0 win with 2x14,15,16 and 22 darts legs to give him a 30.92 average Leading division one is Mark Adams who with 17 points is just one ahead of second in the table Matt Moore. Brickmakers Arms ‘A’, who are already confirmed as Brierley Hill Friday Night League champions won their penultimate fixture of the season against local rivals Brickmakers Arms ‘B’ 6-1 to keep the gap between them and runners up Netherton Cricket Club ‘A’ who had a closer 4-3 home win over Fox Inn ‘B’ (Lye). At the midway point of the Sedgley and Gornal Tuesday Night League only two points separate the top four teams, Old Bulls Head with a 7-2 win at Britannia top the table on 26 points but only on average from Parkes Hall who won their home game against Gornal Labour Club 6-3. Third and fourth placed Ashwood and Coseley Tavern are both on 24 points, Ashwood beating Red Cow 8-1 and Coseley winning 6-3 against Jolly Crispin. The Pip Club League played off the semi finals of their Belgrave and Shadow Cups. In the division one Belgrave Cup games Sports Bar ‘180’ lost to Queens Head and with a win for The Office over Dolphin Wanderers the final will be contested by the division’s top two teams. The division two last four games saw Pip Club beat Dolphin and Old Liberal House win against Red Lion. The Shadow Cup semis for division one saw Kettlebrook Club lose out to Belgrave Club and Birchmoor Club beat Globe (Wilnecote). Playing in the division two final will be Wigginton Arms and Progressive Club, Wigginton winning against Mercian while Progressive had a bye.
