The Sheldon and District Winter League have been busy with various finals as their season draws to an end to make way for the summer season. In the round robin Vice Presidents Trophy Highwood’s Andy Hutchings took the honours by beating Anthony Dews (Millhouse) 3-0 and Neil Parsonage (Banbury Club) 2-1.
The Punch Bowl title was fought out between Castle Vale Residents Association and Three Horse Shoes, with the former just getting the 5-4 edge. Losing semi finalists were Fordbridge Social and Shard End RBL.
The Sheldon Shield final was also a close 5-4 result with Glebe Community Centre getting the better of Hen and Chickens.
The league’s team secretaries and league officials did battle in the Jubilee Trophy, the eventual winner being match secretary David Sutton, who won by the best of three legs against league chairman and Fordbridge Social representative Alan Mayell.
Queens are the new Tamworth Cue Sports League Open Cup champions. They accounted for Red Lion ’A’ in the semi’s and then beat Red Lion ’B’ in the final. Globe were the other losing semi finalists.
In the league’s division one singles knockout T.Stubbs became champion with a final success over M.Fowler. Reaching the semi’s were S.Latham and R.Snaith. The division two knockout saw S.Brown take the honours. Brown won the title with a last gasp victory over N.Warner. Losing out in the last four were W.Hewins and M.Trowman.
The eventual winning partnership in the doubles knockout was that of Sam Whittaker and Peter Albrighton, who in the final disposed of Chris Payne and Andy Starkey.
Robbie Earl, champion of the Brookmeadow Individual League was unable to make it a double as he lost out in the final of the league’s singles knockout to league runner up Mark Showering. Showering won the very close 3-2 final with top shots of 129,2x121,6x100 as opposed to Earl’s 180,2x140 and 4x100. It was then Showering’s turn to miss out on a double as he and his partner Paul Hogan lost 3-1 to John Whitehouse and Alan Smith in the final of the doubles.
The singles knockout was on the fixture card for the G.U.L.P. Charity League and it was Tribe representative Chris Stokes who won the crown for the second time in three years. Chris was in fine form throughout and although taken the full distance in the final by Colin Wyatt (Tigers) he still got the all important 2-1 verdict.
In the doubles knockout the final turned out to be an all Tigers affair with Paul Webster and Colin Wyatt beating fellow team mates Martin Cooper and Ross Macken for the title. Another Tigers duo, Matt Cooper and T.Comerford made their exits in the semi’s as did G.Tolster and E.Bullock from the Red Lion.
The Small Heath League has been engaged in their Mixed Doubles Competition, with Innisfree duo Gloria Lightwood and John McCaffrey taking the winners crown. Runners up were the Mitre pairing of Helen Davies and Trevor Frost, while losing out in the last four were Jean Forde / Arthur Forde (Innisfree) and Sue Hanlon / Terry Webster (Gunmakers Arms).
