BUILTH WELLS DARTS ACE THROUGH TO NATIONAL FINALS
44-year-old Roy to play in front of thousands in Cardiff finals
Builth Wells darts ace, Roy Morris, is through to the finals of the Worthington’s 2016 Darts Champion of Champions event where he will compete against players from all over the country for a £5,000 top prize.
Roy, a 44-year-old farmer, earned his place in the finals, which are organised by Red Dragon Darts with the additional sponsorship of Molson Coors, by winning a qualifying event heat held at The Boars Head in Brecon. He topped a field of hopefuls, hitting double 10 in the heat final to beat Gareth Goode 2-0.
The Worthington’s 2016 Champion of Champions finals, which take place at St. David’s Hall in Cardiff on August 28, will see 256 darts players – all winners of qualifying events held around the country – compete for a total prize fund of £18,500 in a best of three legs format which mirrors that of the iconic News of the World competition.
Roy, who plays club darts for Llanelwedd in the Builth & District Darts League and Middi A in the Llandrindod Wells Darts League, only took up the sport seven years ago. Since then his success has been limited to winning local competitions and reaching the last 64 in the Welsh Open.
“Reaching the finals of the Worthington’s 2016 Champion of Champions event is my biggest achievement to date,” says Roy. “Being a farmer makes it hard to put in the practice but I’m looking forward to meeting and competing with some of the best players in the country such as last year’s winner Gerwyn Price, former world champion Richie Burnett, Barrie Bates, Wes Newton and Paul Hogan. Playing in front of more than a thousand fans will be a great experience.”
