Darts News - 18.11.2024
The new season in the UKDA National League is up to game three and already the opening three fixtures have produced major shocks in the Cosmo Darts Premier Division, the biggest of those shocks being provided by reigning champions Lancashire who have now lost two of their opening three fixtures which is twice as many as they lost throughout last season. In their latest fixture Lancashire suffered a 19-17 defeat away to Hampshire making it two consecutive 19-17 losses as they lost their previous game, a home tie against Warwickshire. Last season’s runners-up Yorkshire are not enjoying the best of starts as they also have lost one of their first three games going down 20-16 at Essex in their last outing but they have made amends for that in their latest fixture as they recorded a huge 28-8 home win over London to see them move up from third to top of the table with seventy-two points replacing Cornwall who drop to second place after losing 19-17 away to Glamorgan who take over in third place with sixty points the same number as fourth in the division Hampshire. Lancashire are a further two points adrift in fifth place.
No fewer than three of the top averages came in the rearranged fixture between Glamorgan and Cornwall, a game that was played one week earlier than scheduled. Jamie Kay (Cornwall) having a superb 33.46 average and 4-1 win in his game against Glamorgan’s Tim Jones for the top men’s ‘A’ team average. Glamorgan’s Rhian O’Sullivan had the top ladies ‘A’ average of 27.30 in her 3-2 win over Maria O’Brien (Cornwall). A 25.05 average and straight 3-0 win over Sandra Quinn (Glamorgan) saw Cornwall’s Nikki Furse top the ladies ‘B’ average and taking the men’s ‘B’ award was Lancashire’s Jason Chisnell who beat Hampshire’s Graham Chalk 4-1 and averaged 32.43.
In the Andy Wheeler Fisheries Championship Division a 24-12 home win over Northamptonshire was enough for Suffolk to hold on to pole position with a total of seventy points. Humberside played their home tie with Derbyshire one week later than scheduled and finished all-square at 18-18 but the draw was enough to keep them in the number two spot with sixty-two points, thirteen short of Suffolk but two more than third placed Oxfordshire who suffered a 19-17 defeat at Sussex. Third placed Cambridgeshire had a massive 29-7 home win over newly relegated Staffordshire which saw them move up two places in the table to fourth on the same sixty points as Oxfordshire.
Top players for the division in game three were, for the men’s ‘A’ Tavis Dudeney (Sussex) who had a straight 4-0 win over Oxfordshire’s Andrew Charlett and averaged 31.81. For the men’s ‘B’ it was J.J.Wright (Suffolk) who topped the averages with 31.31 in another straight 4-0 win over Joe Judkins (Northamptonshire), For the ladies the ‘A’ award went to Suffolk’s Jo Locke who in her 3-0 win over Northamptonshire’s Angela Barrow chalked up an impressive 27.33 average while the top ‘B’ average for game three was 20.59 which was recorded by Humberside’s Abi Scott in her 3-0 win over Derbyshire’s Carol Western.
A 26-10 home win over Buckinghamshire keeps Middlesex top of the L-Style Division One table with a total of seventy-four points, the win seeing them extend their lead from five to fourteen points at the top of the table. Leicestershire were unable to hold on to second place going down 25-11 at Merseyside which saw them drop three places to fifth on fifty-one points. Moving up one place and taking over at number two is Clwyd who had a narrow 19-17 victory at Cleveland who are placed fourth with fifty-two points, two fewer than third in the table Merseyside.
Merseyside took two of the top four averages for the division Jane Robson winning the ladies ‘A’ award with her 25.91 average and 3-0 win over Leicestershire’s Mem Martin-Jones and Ben Devine winning the men’s ‘B’ with his 28.23 average and 4-0 win over Leicestershire’s Elliot Neary. The men’s ‘A’ top average of 32.32 was achieved by West Midlands Shaun Carroll who had 4-0 success playing against Somerset’s Mike Harper. Sam Dixon (Cleveland) was the ladies ‘B’ award winner with her 20.04 average and 3-0 win over Clwyd’s Rachael Simpson.
Worcestershire took their lead at the top of division two from a single point to eight points with a 24-12 home win over Surrey while County Durham slipped down the table from second to third after they lost 20-16 away to Tyne and Wear. Salopian had a hard fought 19-17 victory away to Cumbria to move up one place to second with sixty-seven points, four more than third placed County Durham who are now just one point ahead of their hosts and victors Tyne and Wear in fourth place.
Wiltshire’s Lee Evans had a super 32.97 average in his 4-1 win over Gwynedd’s Noel Coward to top the men’s ‘A’ averages while the ‘B’ award went to Surrey’s Darren Bryant who won 4-1 against Worcestershire’s Ian Papper giving him a 28.89 average. County Durham’s Linda Hindmarch averaged 25.05 in her 3-0 win over Tyne and Wear’s Marie Seago to clinch the ladies ‘A’ award while Northumberland’s Debbie Waugh whose 25.47 average and 3-0 result against Nottinghamshire’s Ronnie Johnson earned her the ladies ‘B’ award.
The results from game three saw the top two teams in division three swap places as former leaders Wirral lost their home tie with Shropshire 21-15 and Norfolk who, were formerly placed second won 20-16 away to Gloucestershire. Eight points separate the top two teams, Norfolk on seventy-seven points and Wirral on sixty-nine which is three more than third in the division Breconshire who hold on to the number three spot following their 19-17 home win over Isle of Wight.
A 30.06 average for Montgomery and Radnor’s John Williams-Jones and 4-1 win over Pembrokeshire’s Paul Emmanuel earned him the men’s ‘A’ top average award while Jimmy Bristow (West of England) took the men’s ‘B’ accolade for his 4-0 success and 29.04 average over Bedfordshire’s Paul Hale. In the ladies games the ‘A’ teams top average went to Gloucestershire’s Elaine Powell who had a 21.47 average in her 3-0 win over Norfolk’s Amy Lincoln, Wirral’s Kim Holden narrowly missing out as she defeated Shropshire’s Nicola Ball 3-1 with a 21.46 average. That was not the case for Holden’s team-mate Tina Nolan as her 18.79 average and 3-0 win over Shropshire’s Suzie Burton earned her the ladies ‘B’ award.

Following their fantastic away win against Lancashire in the Cosmo Darts Premier Division of the UKDA National League, Warwickshire were brought back down to earth with a home tie against their nemesis Leicestershire. With defeats to Leicestershire in their previous three encounters, Warwickshire were looking to break the hoodoo and chalk up a win, but unfortunately even home advantage was not enough to see that happen.
The ladies ‘B’ got off to a good start when lady of the match Jodie Rigg put them one up when she won 3-1 with a 17.28 average against Heather Lodge after Lodge had won the first leg. The hosts lead was extended to 2-0 when Donna Pinch came from two down against Sally Evans and go on to win 3-2. Unfortunately from 2-0 up the lead was reversed and Leicestershire ladies ‘B’ went on to win 4-2. Hayley Reeson was the visitor’s first winner beating Caroline Pike 3-2 after the home player had won the first and fourth legs. Lee Bingham restored parity when she won 3-1 against Denise Keyte and with 3-1 wins in the last two games for Laura Tye and Amy Evans over respective opponents Chloe McKivett-Saunders and Nina Bolt, Leicestershire ladies ‘B’ got the 4-2 result.
The men’s ‘B’ had a weekend they would like to quickly forget as Allan Edwards gave the away side the early lead when he won the opener against Mark Strong 4-0. Ian McFarlane (Warwickshire) staged a fantastic comeback as he came from 3-0 down to beat Dave Wilson 4-3 and in the process earn himself the man of the match award for his 25.43 average. Leicestershire then by the midway point stormed into a 5-1 lead with wins from Justin Roberts, Scott Boryszczuk, Thomas Atkinson and Neil Smith who in turn defeated Noah Rose (4-1), Karl Reynolds (4-3), Adam Hancock (4-2) and William Naylor (4-3).
The second half began where the first left off with the away side’s Michael Machin beating Jnr Joyce 4-2 before the home team chalked up their second and what would be their final winner when Mark Faulkner won 4-2 against Danny Goddard. From their lead of 6-2 Leicestershire then went on to win the game 10-2 with further wins from Tony Hill, William Baker, Andy Houghton and Ross Twell who had respective wins over Ian Shaw (4-2), Mark Martin (4-2), Zac Prince (4-1) and Dave Hill (4-3).
Sunday’s ladies ‘A’ game saw Warwickshire lose the match before getting a win on the board as Mandy Smith, Casey Gallagher, Trina Gulliver MBE and Kelly Haverson handed out defeats to their opponents Courtney Hine (3-0), Wendy Adams (3-2), Marian Conway (3-0) and Kirsty Hinchliffe (3-1). Warwickshire made the result a more respectable 4-2 to Leicestershire when Natalie Gilbert beat Heidi Garrard 3-0 and lady of the match Hannah Meek won 3-2 against Paula Jacklin with a 21.33 average.
Warwickshire’s men’s ‘A’ team provided the only win of the weekend for the home side, Mark Carter putting them one up when he won 4-3 against Shane Lowe after Lowe had taken a 3-1 lead. Samuel Price doubled the hosts lead when he won 4-2 against Kev Clarke, Price having an impressive 147 finish in fifteen darts in the fourth leg. From 2-0 up the running score was levelled as former Warwickshire players Antony Allen and Jenson Walker in turn won 4-0 and 4-2 against Steve Hine and Kevin Dowling. The home team forged ahead again in the fifth when San Whittaker came from 2-0 down to Darren Phillips but go on and win 4-2 only to see the score level at the halfway stage when Thomas Atkinson (Leicestershire) wrapped up the half with a 4-3 win over Jack Wareing after Wareing had opened up leads of 1-0 and 2-1.
For a third time Warwickshire’s men’s ‘A’ took the lead when Martin Tonks won the second half opener against Ben Hazel 4-0 and with man of the match Nigel Heydon beating Lloyd Pennell 4-3 after Pennell had gone 2-1 up and then levelled in the sixth the home side were leading 5-3. Heydon had winning legs of 18,15,13 and 14 darts giving him a superb 32.30 average. The hosts then had their 5-3 lead reduced to 5-4 as Nick Fullwell won 4-1 against Matty Washbrooke, but they were guaranteed at the worst a draw when Gareth Braham beat Andy Houghton 4-3. There was not a long wait for the win as in the very next game Jamie Hughes added his 4-3 success over Tom Martin to the home team’s tally to put them in an unassailable 7-4 lead with the result taken to 8-4 when Danny Lauby won the final game of the weekend against James Beeton 4-0.
Despite the 22-14 defeat Warwickshire actually moved up one place in the table to sixth on fifty-two points some twenty short of new leaders Yorkshire.

Black Country’s second fixture in the L-Style Division One of the UKDA National League was an away tie with Berkshire, prior to the game Black Country were lying eighth in the division with twenty-seven points from just one game and their opponents seventh on twenty-eight points from two games.
Kicking off the proceedings were the ladies ‘B’ and it was the home team that had the better start as Chris Ruffell and Nipaporn Smith put them two up with respective 3-0 and 3-1 wins against Stella Sims and Amy-Leigh Tolley. It took a lady of the match performance from Sarah-Jane Parker to stop the rot as she reduced the arrears to 2-1 with her straight 3-0 win over Tracey Kingston and 15.66 average. A further 3-0 win for Paige Robbins over Angela Hogan levelled the score before Berkshire forged ahead again in the fifth when Tania Burdett beat Lacey Hughes 3-0 and with a 3-2 win for Carole Holroyd against Kirsty Shaughnessy in the last game Berkshire were the 4-2 winners.
The men’s ‘B’ began with a man of the match win for Dave Edwards (Black Country) who handed his opponent Ryan Priestly a 4-0 whitewash and averaged 25.69. Despite such a promising start it was Berkshire who then took the lead as Glen Brown and James Clifton in turn won 4-1 against John Green and Neil Steventon. A close 4-3 win for Mark Jones over Ian Hobbs levelled the game at 2-2 before Black Country took the lead for a second time, this time thanks to Mark Rollinson who won 4-1 against Robert Carr. By the halfway point the away side had opened up a 4-2 lead as Kieron Bridgwater added his 4-0 success over Lewis Doe to their tally.
Black Country’s lead was extended to 6-2 as the second half got underway, Wayne Hobday winning 4-3 against Ashley Upson and Ian Townsend beating Doug Harwood 4-1. Berkshire got their third stripe on the board in the ninth when Jesse Goddard won 4-3 against Rob Smith but that was to be their last winner as Sam Bissell beat Alex Ball 4-1, Rich Bowen won 4-2 against Steven Hobbs and rounding off a 9-3 victory for Black Country was Al Smith who had a 4-3 win over Ryan Newton.
The first four games of the ladies ‘A’ match all went with the first throw advantage with Black Country twice taking the lead first through Chez Allcock, who took the lady of the match award for her 20.88 average and 3-0 win over Karen Jackson and then thanks to Doreen Hunt who had a 3-1 success against Vanessa O’Connell. Wiping out the away team’s leads were Ally Judge with her 3-2 win against Tammy Chance and Kelly Ellis whose 3-0 win over Abbey Hunt restored parity at 2-2. The penultimate encounter saw the sequence break when Berkshire’s Debbie Shadwell accounted for Kirsty Shaughnessy with a 3-0 result only to see the game levelled at 3-3 when Heather Wright won the final game against Hayley Watts 3-2.
With the running score standing at 14-10 in Black Country’s favour just five winners were all that were required to secure an overall victory for the weekend and four of those were secured in the first half. Paul Wells and Tom Bissell opened up a 2-0 lead for the away side when Wells won 4-3 against James Shaw and Bissell beat Paul Hogan 4-2. Anthony Dean pulled one back for the hosts when he won 4-1 against Trev Brennan but Black Country’s two games buffer was restored in the fourth when Jamie Barrowman beat James Wiggins 4-1. Terry Stubbs was Berkshire’s second winner as he added a 4-2 win over George Willetts to their account but at the midway point it was the visitors who were leading 4-2 after Steve Jones closed the half with a 4-1 success over Paul Holloway.
The overall win was achieved as early as the seventh game, Jamie Rollinson getting the second session underway with a 4-1 win over Jack Mayoh. It was a this point that the home team had their best run of the match as they went from 5-2 down to lead 6-5 with wins from Richard Stride, Karl Williams, Joe Lacey and Stephen Wood who in turn defeated Alex Howells (4-3), Michael Powell (4-1), Dan Homer (4-1) and Martin Greenwood (4-2). The last game of the day and weekend went the full seven legs distance with Black Country’s Liam Kelly taking the man of the match award for his 4-3 win over Peter Bisset and 27.56 average, putting the final score for the game at 6-6.
The overall 20-16 victory for Black Country saw them replace their hosts in seventh place with fifty points, six more than Berkshire who slipped to eighth. Although twenty-four points short of leaders Middlesex, Black Country are only ten points behind second placed Clwyd and they have a game in hand on all of the teams above them apart from third placed Merseyside who like Black Country have only played two games.
---------------------------------
In the L-Style Division One the majority of teams have played three fixtures but being as the West Midlands had their opening day game against Black Country postponed they have only played two, the first of which was an away game against Clwyd which they lost 22-14 to put them bottom of the table. Game number two for the West Midlands was a home tie with Somerset who prior to the game were in a somewhat comfortable fifth position in the table.
Saturday saw Somerset ladies ‘B’ get the better start as Samantha Werrett beat Tara Simmons-Fullwood 3-2 and Zoe Liddle won 3-1 against Julie Emery. West Midlands lady of the match Kelly Doleman stopped the visitors charge when she won 3-2 against Sue Lane with an 18.17 average. The away side had their two games lead restored in the fourth when Laura Phillips got the better of Jacqueline Simmons with her 3-0 win. Trailing 3-1 the hosts then strung together two consecutive wins from Shellbie Simmons and Gemma Barrett who in turn won 3-1 and 3-0 against Lea Ford and Kay Bissett to put the final score at three each.
The men’s ‘B’ had a great start to their game as in double-quick time they were 4-0 up, Kieran O’Mahoney got the ball rolling when he won 4-0 against Dean Baker, Callum Parkes doubled the lead with his 4-1 success against Ryan Palmer and making it 3-0 was man of the match Mark Craddock who averaged 26.20 in his 4-1 win over Peter Messer. Ash Khayat made it 4-0 when he won 4-1 against Lee Gregory, all before Somerset got their first stripe on the board when Jason Woodyard beat Will Beaden 4-3. At the midway point of the match the home side were leading 5-1 after Martin Price added his 4-1 win over Carl Galeitzke to their tally.
Assuring West Midlands of at least a share of the points was Adam Teasdale when he won the second half opener against Mervyn Adams 4-1. Somerset got their second winner in game eight when Adrian Beale won 4-2 against Glen McGrandle but the game was won for the home team in the ninth when Dean Simmons-Fullwood beat Steve Foster 4-2. With the hosts leading 7-2 the visitors then got their best run of the match, two wins in a row as Kevin Hardy won 4-3 against Paul Price and Michael Fenton beat Luke Griffiths 4-1 but with a final 4-3 win for Ian Stanton over Liam Ward, West Midlands men’s ‘B’ won the game 8-4.
For the ladies ‘A’ it was a weekend to forget as their opponents opened up a 2-0 lead when Shelley Blackman beat Sarah Maybury 3-1 and with a similar result Kate Hulme won against Claire Hobbs. Gemma Barrett (West Midlands) halved the deficit in game three when she won 3-2 against Tracey Stiling and as it turned out Gemma’s win and 15.89 average was enough to take the match award as the home team’s last three players Hannah Davies, Evonne Taylor and Jacqueline Trott in turn lost to Karen Littler (3-1), Becky Taylor (3-2) and Sally Smith (3-1) to give Somerset ladies ‘A’ a 5-1 win.
With the running score standing at 12-12 both men’s ‘A’ teams had everything to play for and it was the home side that were quickest off the mark as Shaun Carroll began the match in the very best possible way earning himself the match award for his straight 4-0 win over Mike Harper with a terrific 32.32 average. Taking the score to 2-0 was Martin Price who got the better of Leigh Taylor in a seven legs encounter. Lee Smith pulled one back for Somerset in the third when he won 4-0 against Ian Jones, but with a similar 4-0 result for Michael Baker over Steve Wright, West Midlands were 3-1 up.
