Darts News – A West Midlands Round Up By Alan Towe

It was certainly third time lucky for Warwickshire as in their rearranged premier division fixture with Cheshire in the BDO Inter County Championships they followed up two consecutive defeats with a terrific 22-14 win.
It was something of a strange weekend as both ladies teams finished all square at 3-3 and both men’s teams chalked up 8-4 wins.
For the ladies Trina Gulliver (22.43) and Lisa Whitmore (19.30) took the respective ‘A’ and ‘B’ team awards while for the men’s ‘A’ it was Dean Stewart with a great 30.36 average and for the ‘B’ Matthew Edgar recorded a tremendous 32.58 average.
The win has seen Warwickshire move up from next to bottom of the table to second place with 53 points, however the remainder of the teams in the division at this point had only played two games.

Week four in the Sheldon and District Winter League and in the premier division second placed Crown at Shard End reduced the average deficit on Crown at Olton to just one point of as they won 7-2 against East Birmingham Allotment Holders Association and their rivals were 6-3 winners at The Lyndon, both teams having won all four of their games so far.
In division one Willclare Sports and Social lost pole position after losing their home tie with Solihull Moors 6-3, Willclare dropping to second place while Moors move up one place to fifth. A 6-3 win at Crown-Forget-Me-Not has seen Iron Horse take over the number one spot, Holy Souls, who won 5-4 against Yardley Ex Colts are third, they and Iron Horse the only two teams to have won their first three games.
In division two Crown Arrows and Ridgemere Flights in turn won 5-4 against Greville Arms and Meadway Sports and Social, Arrows have played one game more than Flights and with eight points are two ahead of Flights at the top of the table.

The top two teams in division one of the Four Oaks and District League The Beehive and Golden Hind both won 8-1 this week against respective opponents Plough and Arrows and Pint Pot Flights. Third placed Boldmere St Mike’s had much tougher opposition in the shape of Old Oscott Arrows who took a 3-1 lead before Boldmere went 4-3 up. Arrows took the eighth but the final game of the match went to Boldmere to give them a very close 5-4 verdict and put them on the same four points as Beehive and Golden Hind.
In division two Golden Hind Arrows won 8-1 against The Park to top the table with Bishop Vesey just one leg of average behind them after their 6-3 win at The Fox. The Lions and Brookvale Social are both undefeated but have only played one game so far.

Just two results this week from both divisions of the South Birmingham League, in division one St John’s opened their account with a 5-4 win at The Family Tree and The Raven won their home tie with Coleshill Social by the same margin..
In division two Smithswood Social played their first game of the season and won 6-3 at home against The C’s while leaders Kingfisher made it two wins in a row when they beat The Bell 5-4 to lead the table with four points.
For the first time since the 1993/1994 season the league took on the Sports Argus Charity team last Friday and although they went 1-0 up when Neil Parsonage beat Wayne Matthews 2-0 the final result was an 8-1 win for the Argus team. Despite the heavy defeat it was a brilliant night and a fantastic amount of over £300 was raised for charity.

The Forest of Arden Winter League played the preliminary round of their Presidents Cup and the biggest win of the round went to Highwood KB who handed out a 9-0 whitewash to their hosts Greville Arms, close behind were division one leaders Journeys End who won 8-1 at Riley’s Red Arrows. In the other two games Olton Crown beat Highwood Exiles 7-2 and with a close 5-4 result Sheldon Marlborough Flights won against Greville Arrows.

The Shirley Red Lion Premier League has a new leader Simon Edwards, Edwards moved up from second place to the top of the table with 3-0 wins over both Stuart Dixon and Steve Sidwell to give him a total of 46 points two more than previous leader Paul Higgins who lost his first game against Julian Harris 3-0 but recovered to win the second against Alex Hesketh by the same 3-0 scoreline putting him on 44 points, two fewer than Edwards but he does have a game in hand.
It was a good week for Noreen Harris who moved up the table with 3-2 wins over both Mark Cater and Julian Harris.

Little change at the top of the Shirley and District Monday Night League as Cider House were the only losers in the top half of the table and as a result of their 8-1 defeat by second in the table Crown Jewels drop one place to seventh. Crown Jewels were in top form with Dave Duncan and Andy Hutchings both hitting maximums and John Sidwell recording a 161 finish but they still remain behind leaders Highwood on average, both teams on 26 points, Highwood’s latest success being a 7-2 home win over Baldwin Bears. After the top two teams there is a gap of six points to third placed Shirley Red Lion who won their tie with Blue Bell 6-3, Alex Hesketh notching a 180 for Red Lion.

There were big wins for the top three teams in the Winmau Centre Monday Night League this week leaders What Are Thooose with two maximums from Owen Maiden and one by Kristian Wharton beat Keep It In The Family 42-6, while second placed Misfits, who are only two points off the top had a 40-8 win over Here For The Beer, Sam Guest hitting two maximums and Matt Hallett one for Misfits.
Reigning champions The Untouchables are a further three points behind Misfits and they had a 41 -7 win against Barney Army and once again there were three maximums for the winners, two from Andy Busby and one for Aaron Fellows.

Leaders of the Hilltop Friendly Tuesday Night League Dewdrop had a shock this week when they lost 4-3 at home to their nearest rivals Old Hop Pole and as a result drop into second place with 50 points two fewer than their victors who take over pole position with 52 points plus a game in hand on Dewdrop and with fixtures now quickly running out the result could well be the one that has decided the title.

Despite beating Rubery RBL 4-3 Kings Norton RBL have dropped two places to fifth in the Kings Norton League, the reason being that the two teams just above them West Heath beat Dingle Social 6-1 and Toby Jug ‘A’ won 7-0 against Weoley Hill, all three teams, Toby Jug ‘A’, West Heath and Kings Norton RBL plus Stirchley United are all on 18 points, Stirchley winning 6-1 at Toby Jug Flights.
Leaders Court Oak made it 14 straight wins with a 6-1 win at Bulls Head while second placed Hillyfields won by the same margin at Billesley.

Abbey suffered their first loss in the opening three games in the Harborne League losing their home tie with leaders Court Oak 5-4 and are now second in the table with four points two behind Court Oak but do have a slightly better average. Also on four points are Avenue Flights, Hillyfields ‘A’ and Amber Tavern Pirates, Amber Tavern Pirates being another team to lose for the first time this season as they went down 6-3 at Hillyfields ‘A’.

The Pip Club League played off their Shadow League finals and in division one Tamworth Motor Spares beat Birchmoor Club. Two Gates (Amington) were the division two winners beating Royal Oak and in the division two cup final divisional winners J W Belgrave made it a double by defeating Sports Bar ‘180’ who finished third in the table.

Kevin Lane has taken over pole position from Kevin Harris in the Winmau Centre Thursday Night Champions League. A 6-1 win over Steven Homer has given Lane 191 points exactly the same number as Harris but Lane not only has a better average but also a game in hand. Third placed Mick O’Neill also has a game in hand on Harris but he trails behind him by some 13 points as he is on 178. With only a couple of fixtures remaining the three players look certain to be the final top three the title going to either Lane or Harris with the former now the odds on favourite.

In the Halesowen Monday Night Ladies League leaders Spring Meadow beat third in the table Black Horse 4-3, but then in a rearranged fixture the two teams met again and the result was reversed. Spring Meadow remain at the top of the table but now with 32 points from 21 games and are being chased by second placed White Horse (Quarry Bank) who have 32 points from only 19 games.
