Darts News – A West Midlands Round Up By Alan Towe
In division one of the BDO Inter County Championships West Midlands played away against County Durham, a fixture which saw them win three of the four games and draw the other. There was success for both the ‘B’ teams as the ladies won 4-2 and the men 7-5 with Shannon Hall (16.26) taking the ladies award while the men’s best average of 27.83 was shared by both Neil Pointon and Mark Craddock. The ladies ‘A’ finished all square at three each Sarah Roberts chalking up her fourth award of the season with her 23.48 average. An 8-4 win for the men’s ‘A’ made it six wins in eight games, Scott Baker their top man with a 28.15 average. The win sees West Midlands hold on to their second place in the table eighteen points behind leaders Hampshire and only one ahead of third placed London who they play in their final game of the season, the match now vital to both teams as the winners will join Hampshire in promotion to the premier division. The South Birmingham League played off the finals of their Divisional Cup and in the division one playoff the two top teams in the division squared up to each other with leaders Erdington Members Club beating second placed Mackadown Social 5-4 in a very close game. The Four Oaks and District League had their K & B Installations sponsored Derek Masters Singles Knockout on the agenda which was held at the Red Lion, Erdington and turned out to be a high scoring night of darts. In the preliminary round M.Corfield (The Fox) hit a maximum and W.Naylor (Golden Hind) recorded the first of his two 180's, plus there were eight darts games from J.Kavanagh (Boldmere St Mikes) and M.Partridge (The Boat). In the second round R.Hawker (Boldmere St Mikes) hit a maximum and N.Clarke (The Boat) hit the first of his two 180's, Hawker beating team mate M.Ashton 2-0 in the quarter-finals and S.Paling (Boldmere St Mikes) with a 2-1 result against D.G.Bond joined Hawker, Naylor and Clarke in the last four. The first semi final saw R.Hawker win 2-1 against S.Paling, Hawker dropping his first leg of the night and in the second semi N.Clarke lost 2-0 to W.Naylor, Clarke hitting his second maximum. Despite hitting his second maximum of the night W.Naylot lost the final 3-1 to R.Hawker, last season’s losing finalist. Mark Gwalchmai has replaced Chris Thomas in pole position in the Shirley Red Lion Premier League. Gwalchmai remains unbeaten after twelve games his latest fixtures seeing him draw 2-2 with Mick Bown then winning 4-0 against Nick Walker to give him a total of 37 points one more than Thomas who after beating Steve Sidwell 3-1 was held to a 2-2 draw by Mick Bown. Ten Arches ‘B’ suffered a setback to their title aspirations in the Stourbridge and District Monday Night League when they lost 5-4 away to High Acres who after their win move up three places to tenth while Ten Arches ‘B’ drop from second to joint third with Brickmakers Arms who won 6-3 at Crestwood. Week fourteen fixtures in the Kings Norton League matched the top two teams Hillyfields ‘B’ and West Heath, the game being played on West Heath’s board. The impressive 6-1 result went to leaders Hillyfields ‘B’ to put them four points ahead of their rivals on 28 points. Another vital clash was that between Rubbery RBL and Stirchley United. Quite a few shock results in week 24 of the Brierley Hill Friday Night League, leaders Brickmakers Arms not amongst the shocks as they won 6-1 at The Gate (Colley Gate) but Netherton Cricket Club ‘A’ who were second drop to third following their 4-3 home defeat by Samson and Lion who seventh in the table. Pensnett Welfare Club ‘A take over the number two place after a 6-1 home win over Britannia, but no such joy for Pensnett Welfare Club ‘B’ in fourth place as they went down 4-3 away to Dudley Sports who move up one place to ninth. Week seven of the Yeltz Bar Tuesday Night 501 Singles League saw joint league leaders Tommy Johnson and Neil Steventon run out 5-0 winners against respective opponents Vince Bayliss and Richard Duncan to continue their fine starts to the season with seven wins in as many games. Third in the table Richard Reed was also a 5-0 winner in his game with Tony Duncan to leave him on 27 points, three adrift of the leading duo but with a game in hand. One surprising result was that of the 3-2 win by Doug Richmond over possible league contender Loz Slater. It’s neck and neck in the Bilston and District League with the top two teams adding more wins to their totals in both the 301 and 501 leagues and it’s the same two teams that are first and second in the two leagues. The Nutan took their points tally to 48 in the 301 league with a 7-0 win over Red Lion while their rivals in second place Tilted Barrel won 6-1 against Bilston Conservative Club ‘A’ to put them on 42 points, six short of Nutan but with a game in hand. In the 501 league Nutan again handed a whitewash to their visitors Red Lion winning 3-0 to give them once again 48 points, Tilted Barrel also won 3-0 against Bilston Conservative Club ‘A’ to give them the same 48 points but from one game fewer than Nutan. Week 32 in the Stourbridge and District Wednesday Night League saw Ashwood ‘A’ who are already acclaimed champions win 4-3 at Brickmakers Arms, but the battle is on for the runners up spot as Ashwood ‘B’, Brickmakers Arms and Miners Welfare are all on 48 points, however second placed Ashwood ‘B’ have already completed their 30 games programme while their two rivals both have one game to play but any kind of win would see Brickmakers finish in second place. The Wednesbury and Darlaston Wednesday Night League played off their doubles league at Churchills and the winners were English Oak duo Danny Fellows and Nick Whitehouse with Shellbie Leigh Simmons and Lizzy Arnold who represented Staffordshire Knot runners up.
The Pip Club League staged the finals of their Divisional Cups and taking the title for division one was Queens Head who after beating undefeated division one leaders Bulls Head ‘A’ (Polesworth) in the semi finals then defeated Birchmoor Club in the final. The division two title went to Globe (Wilnecote) with a final victory over Pip Club. In the Wolverhampton Tuesday Night Singles League Riley’s ‘C’ took their unbeaten run to seven games with a massive 7-0 win over Pavilion to keep intact their two points lead over second placed Sunbeam who won 4-3 at The Bull. In division two Dog and Partridge also have seven wins in as many games the latest being 4-3 at Red Lion to stay two points ahead of Wednesfield Legion and Shed. In the division one doubles league Riley’s ‘B’ top the table with a two points lead over Boat, Riley’s winning 2-1 at Victoria and Boat by the same margin at Penn Bowling.
