Congratulations to Scott Baker and Dan Nicholls on winning the prestigious Gold Cup doubles title at the Magna Centre, Rotherham, the very first West Midlands pair to win the event. Baker and Nicholls took on Cameron Menzies and Jim McEwan in the final and with two maximums from Baker and a 132 finish plus a 119 outshot from Nicholls in the fifth leg they clinched the title with a convincing 4-1 scoreline. Gilberts Bar, Willenhall was the setting for the West Midlands play off of the Winmau World Masters and from a starting line-up of 39 players the four players going through to the regional qualifiers finals at Cambridge on the 29th August are Dan Haden (Crown), Dean Mills (Duke of York), Jamie Rollinson (Ten Arches) and Steve Gillam (Landywood), all four of them hoping to secure a place in the grand finals at Bridlington in September.
Week four of the South Birmingham League saw the top two group two teams play each other leaders Pavillions playing hosts to second in the table Iron Horse. The result was a 4-4 draw to leave Pavillions on seven points, two more than Iron Horse. In group three despite beating third placed Crown at Shard End 6-2, Mackadown Social lost their number one spot to Erdington Members Club whose 8-0 home success over The C’s Arrows gives them a slender one leg of average advantage over Mackadown, both teams are on eight points four to the good on Crown at Shard End who hold on to third place. The Raven stay in pole position in group one, their 6-2 win against Conservative Club putting them two points ahead of The Bell. The preliminary round of their Pairs Cup was the order of the day for the Forest of Arden Summer League and winning through from the two games played were Highwood Arms who beat Chelmsley Town 15-0 and Crown Arrows who had a narrow 8-7 win over The C’s. No change at the top of division one of the Sutton and District Summer League as leaders Golden Hind won 6-3 at home against bottom of the division Plough and Arrows, second placed The Boat won 8-1 at home against Old Oscott Arrows and third placed Bishop Vesey, who also played at home, had a 6-3 win over St Thomas’s Club. In the second division top team Erdington Club beat third in the table The Boot 6-3 to keep them four points ahead of their nearest rivals Red Lion who had a much closer 5-4 win against Boldmere Tap. Top played bottom in division three with The Fox beating bottom team Lad in Lane 8-1 to open up a two points lead plus a game in hand over second placed Old Oscott WMC as they lost their home tie with local rivals Oscott Social 5-4. East Birmingham Allotment Holders Association had their lead at the top of the Small Heath League reduced to just two points when they lost 5-4 away to Gulp Tribe who are second in the table and have a game in hand on E.B.A.H.A. A rare win for Cob’s Bar who are next to bottom of the table with just four wins in 14 games as they won 7-2 against bottom team Emerald Club to put them eight points to the good on their opponents. The South West Birmingham Clubs League are up to week five in their season and leading the way in division one is Longbridge United with a perfect score of ten points from their five games to give them a two points lead over second placed CEM West Heath. Yardley Wood head the division two table, they are on eight points from their five games with second and third placed West Heath Warriors and Bartley Green FC ‘B’ both on six points. Only average separates the top two teams in the third division, Selly Oak Flights just having the edge in average on Bartley Green FC ‘A’ to put them in pole position.
There is nothing to separate the top two players in the Sheldon Heath Social In House League as Sean O’Donnell and Paul Sunner are locked together on the same 15 points and average. Both players have won all five of their games so far 3-0, O’Donnell chalking up another two wins this week against Tony Hicks and Phil Ashford while Sunner beat Rob Hicks. The leading duo are one point to the good on third placed Chris Cotter whose latest games saw him win 2-1 against Steve Groves followed by a 3-0 win over Tony Hicks to take him to six games played, one more than the top two. The top three teams in the Camp Hill League all won 6-1 in week fourteen. Cotterils Lane Club continue to hold on to their two points advantage in pole position with a win over New Inn while second in the table Hay Mills Social Club Lions won away at Wagon and Horses to maintain a six points lead over third placed Holy Gulp who had a home tie in which they defeated Devil’s Club. After playing 19 games in the Stourbridge and District Monday Night League Ten Arches ‘A’ remain unbeaten their most recent win being a 7-2 home success against Stourbridge RBL to give them the maximum 38 points. Ten Arches ‘B’ are second on 30 points from 17 games after their 9-0 win away to Old Cat Inn (Wordsley), their whitewash being one of two in the top four teams as Brickmakers Arms in fourth place defeated Starving Rascal by the same margin to give them 28 points from 17 games. Third in the table Gate ‘B’ are on the same 30 points as Ten Arches ‘B’ from the same amount of games, their latest win being 6-3 away to Kingswinford Snooker Club. Wins for the top six teams in the Rowley Monday Night League means there is little change at the top of the table. After a 6-3 win against The Cottage The Bell lead the field on 36 points while Ex Serviceman’s ‘A’ in second place, with a 180 from S.Siviter recorded a 9-0 win at Haden Cross to help reduce the average deficit slightly but remain two points behind the leaders. Third and fourth placed Cradley Liberal Club and Ivy Bush are both on 28 points and in turn beat Three Diamonds ‘X’ (8-1) and Roost (7-2). Carl Moore (Three Diamonds) was another player to hit a maximum in his team’s 7-2 win over Yeltz Bar while Steve Broome (Ex Serviceman’s ‘B’) chalked up a 160 break in side’s 5-4 home win over Tividale FC. After their impressive 6-3 win over Dudley Ex Serviceman’s Club leaders of the Netherton Thursday Night League last week it was back to reality for Riddins Tavern as this week they lost by the same 6-3 margin away to White Horse who are fourth in the table and as a result Riddins drop from second to third place surrendering their number two spot to Delph Bell whose 5-4 win at Bulls Head gives them 21 points from 9 games, Riddins are on 18 after playing 10 games. It was a return to winning ways for leaders Dudley Ex Serviceman’s Club as they won 6-3 against The Crown to put them on 27 points from 10 games. The Brierley Hill Monday Night League played the first round of their Pete Dabnor Memorial Knockout the biggest win of the round being supplied by Delph Bell who won 8-1 at home to Blue Brick. Dudley Ex Serviceman’s Club were not far behind the Bell as they won 7-2 at Dudley Sports ‘A’. Pensnett Liberal Club accounted for their guests Lamp Tavern with a 6-3 result while there were 5-4 wins for Brickmakers Arms, Roebuck, Mount Pleasant, Dudley Sports ‘B’ and New Talbot who in turn defeated Bulls Head (Netherton), Limes Club, Brewers Wharf, Portway and The Swan. Former leaders of the Hilltop Friendly Tuesday Night League Island Inn fell another two points behind leaders Dewdrop as they, for the fifth time in 19 games lost. Playing away to middle of the table Ivy Bush Island Inn went down 4-3 and with a 5-2 win for top team Dewdrop against The Wonder they now trail the leaders by six points. The Vine and Old Hop Pole are just two points behind Island Inn, Vine winning 4-3 at Merry-Go-Round and Old Hop Pole having a 6-1 win at Hayes Social. Week 17 in the Yeltz Bar Tuesday Night 501 Singles League saw no fewer than five 5-0 wins from the eight games played with four of them going to players in the top five places in the table leader Tommy Johnson, second placed Richard Reed, fourth in the table Neil Steventon and fifth placed Richard Hill. This week also saw the introduction of a second singles league with ten new players and after the first round of fixtures it’s Jason Clarke with a 5-0 win over Stuart Stanton that is setting the pace closely followed by Mark Bayliss and Jason Tromans who in turn won 4-1 against John Griffiths and John Simpson. In the division one singles section of the Wolverhampton Tuesday Night League leaders Riley’s ‘C’ and second placed Sunbeam both recorded important wins, Riley’s (30 points) winning 5-2 against fourth in the table Wednesfield Conservative Club (22 points) and Sunbeam (26 points) accounting for Riley’s ‘B’ (22 points) who are third with a 6-1 result. In the second division Dog and Partridge won 5-2 away to fourth placed Royal to give them 34 points, six more than second placed Wednesfield Legion who went one better with a 6-1 win over Ukrainian Club. In division one of the doubles league top side Riley’s ‘B’ had their lead cut to four points as they lost 2-1 to Sunbeam and second in the table Wednesfield Conservative Club won by the same margin at Riley’s ‘C’. ECC ‘A’ preserved their two points lead at the top of the Tettenhall Wednesday Night League with a 4-3 win away to fourth in the table Moreton but Whitmore Reans WMC keep up the pressure on the leaders with a 5-2 win at Village Inn. At the other end of the table the two bottom teams played each other, Dog and Partridge moving up one place from next to bottom with a 4-3 win over Jones Road who remain rooted to the foot of the table. Dog and Partridge moved over Village in with a slightly better average as both teams are on 10 points, four more than Jones Road.
