Mark Lawrence's attempt to become the first player to win two Streamline Taxis York Open Darts Championship Ranking Events during 2017 came to a halt as Humberside's Trevor Holtby claimed his first York Darts Promotions tournament success.
Ranking Event 6 organised in Association with York Print and Red Dragon Darts saw a nine leg thriller as Holtby edged to victory with 18-16-18-16 and 19 darts against Lawrence's 14-17-18-17.
In the Semi-Finals Holtby (21-18-21-19) defeated James Weldon (21-21-16) 4-3 as Lawrence (14) whitewashed Humberside's Lee Smith in the other.
The 1/4 Finals saw Smith (15) beat Andy Walshaw 3-1 which was the same margin of Lawrence's (12) victory over Steve Cuppit. Holtby (20-16) won 3-2 against Matt Green (21-20) whilst Weldon hit 3 x 180's in 17-21 and 21 dart legs to repeated the same scoreline against Bill Pearson who added a 180 in 2 x 21 dart leg victories.
Although the entries, fifty two, was considerably lower than normal the standard was still as high as ever. Seventy-Six legs of 21 darts or less were recorded whilst James Weldon led the way in the 180 stats with three in one game. Jonny Lester, Jim Bannister, Matt Green and Jaron Esteve hit two maximums each with Steve Silver, Mark Lawerence, Dave Lord, Bill Pearson and Trevor Holtby added one a piece giving us a total of 16 in total.
Howden's Mike Atkinson took the £25 prize for the highest checkout taking out two ton plus finishes 157 and 120. Mick Burden had 135 outshot and Richard "Rowdy" Yates closed on 116.
The prize for the Furthest Lady was shared between Tracey Parkin and Linda Staveley with Ryan Lea taking the Furthest Youth award.
