Glen Durrant defended his BDO world title in an epic tie-break and admitted: “It’s the best moment of my life.”
Duzza survived two match darts before beating Mark McGeeney 7-6 in a slugfest final at Lakeside last night.
Durrant looked home and hosed at 6-4 up before Gladiator pulled it back to 6-6 and then missed double 18 to win it. But in the tie-break, Duzza held his nerve to win 4-2 in legs to secure the tense finale.
Durrant said: “My bottle had gone, there was no way I was going to hit the doubles at one point. Somewhere, somehow I found something in the reserves. I just didn’t want to go out that way.
“But I found some doubles to get back to two-each and the last set was incredible. The 149 was massive, it was a ridiculous celebration I apologise, that’s not my style normally.
“The way it finished it’s probably the best moment of my life.”
McGeeney admitted: “I’m disappointed to lose but it’s been a good tournament for me. I missed double 18 to win the match, I’ll learn from that.”
There wasn’t a width of a flight between the rivals until Duzza finally gained some breathing space to go 6-4 up as McGeeney went off the boil.
But somehow Gladiator dragged himself up by the bootlaces to produce two incredible sets of sheer guts to force a decider.
However McGeeney missed two match darts to win it and Duzza took out a nerveless double one to take it into a tie-break.
A sensational 149 kill from Durrant broke a clearly despondent McGeeney’s throw and heart before double three finally wrapped up his back-to-back title dream.
