Jocky Wilson, Top of the Pops and one of TV^s most surreal moments.
Tonight^s Jocky Wilson Cup - featuring 180 bets stars James Wade and Robert Thornton and named in honour after the Kirkcaldy born darts legend brings forth memories of one of television^s more surreal moments.
It was the 30th September 1982, Wilson was the reigning darts World Champion having beaten John Lowe earlier in the year. Dexy^s Midninght Runners - a Birmingham based pop band were also enjoying great success - they had earlier that year released ^Come on Eileen^ which had reached number 1 on the UK charts and which went on to become the best selling single of that year.
It would have been difficult to imagine a scenario where the worlds of Jocky Wilson and Dexy^s Midnight Runners would have collided, but on that September night fate conspired to do just that. Dexy^s were performing the follow up to ^Come On Eileen^ on ^Top of the Pops^ - the number one rated and most influential music programme on British television playing to audiences of up to 15 million people.
Dexy^s new single was a cover of the Van Morrison classic ^Jackie Wilson Said^ - an ode to the legendary American soul singer. However whether due to a communication breakdown, a cheeky request by Dexy^s famously eccentric lead singer Kevin Rowland, or as a result of a studio staff prank - Dexy^s played the song against a pictorial backdrop of not Jackie Wilson but Jocky Wilson.
The performance has subsequently achieved cult status and of the thousands of bands who appeared on the programme it is ironic and highly amusing that one of the most lasting images of the show is the appearance of a grinning chubby-cheeked dart player - testimony in part to Jocky^s enduring popularity and cult figure status which sees him honoured this evening and which despite him not throwing a competitive dart in around 15 years ensures that the Jocky Wilson legend lives on.
