Last chance for pub darts players to pitch against world champion
Joint sponsors Coinspinner and Red Dragon Darts are holding last of their ‘Super Series’ of four contests at The Fountain Inn, Builth Wells on April 19
The winner of each contest receives prizemoney and a chance to take on either van Gerwen, Welsh star Mark Webster, Australian ace Simon Whitlock or Liverpool’s Stephen Bunting in front of an audience of up to 800 people at the ‘Night of Champions’ darts exhibition event to be held at Penmaenau Farm, Builth Wells on May 10.
Each of the four winners go into the hat to play one of the world champions in the best of three legs on May 10. Entry for the ‘Super Series’ costs £5 and players must register with Lisa on Tel: 07875 461247. More information is available on the website www.reddragondarts.com.
Already qualified for the ‘Night of Champion’ event are Jim Williams of Kington, who won the January contest, Mark Layton of Llandrindod Wells, the February winner and Mark Davies of Builth Wells, the March winner.
Williams has one of the four darts stars in particular in his sights. "If I had a choice of who I’d like to play it would be Stephen Bunting because he beat me in the quarter finals of the World Masters and it would be nice to have a rematch against him,” he said. "It’s going to be a really top night and I’m looking forward to it.”
All four star players are keen to impress at the biggest darts event staged in Mid Wales. "I^m looking forward to being a part of the first big darts event in Powys,” said van Gerwen. "It^s a fantastic line-up and I will be doing my best to make sure I am the first winner of this event."
Whitlock also said he was excited about playing in Powys for the first time. "It should be a fantastic night and I can^t wait to play and hopefully win," he added.
Welshman Webster said: "It^s always great to play in a brand new event and it^s fantastic news for Powys to be experiencing a big darts tournament for the first time. There are some of the best players in the world on show and we will all be aiming to be the first champion."
Tickets for the ‘Night of Champions’, which will also star glamorous walk-on model Danielle Allfree, are available through licensed premises supplied by Coinspinner. The £25 silver tickets are sold out and 60 remaining £50 VIP tickets, which give the holder a chance to meet the darts stars before the event, premium seats and access to a VIP bar, are now being snapped up. Call Barry Bear on Tel: 07516 740311 for ticket partner details.
It’s the second time that the joint sponsors have teamed up to organise a major darts event. Last summer, they organised a successful Champion of Champions Grand Final at The Hi-Tide, Porthcawl, a competition which brought together the best pub darts players in the Wales and the borders to play the best of three, 501 legs matches with more than £4,000 prizemoney on offer. This year’s competition is to be launched soon with an expected £20,000 prize fund.
The sponsors are keen to get more people playing darts to support pubs across Wales and the borders. With offices across the UK and Europe, including a new hub in Ebbw Vale, Coinspinner - www.coinspinner.co.uk - specialises in supplying pay-to-play entertainment equipment to pubs and members clubs, while Red Dragon Darts is a Bridgend-based darts specialist with a client base across the UK.
"Our main aim in organising the ‘Super Series’ and the ‘Night of Champions’ exhibition event is to encourage more people to play darts in pubs across Wales, which will in turn support the licensed trade,” said Lee Hammond, spokesman for Coinspinner.
"It’s not every day that a pub darts player gets a chance to take on one of the big stars of the sport in front of a huge audience. We are now in the process of selling the remaining VIP tickets, so darts fans really need to get their skates on if they want to attend.”
