Luke Humphries - Exeter’s Premier League Contender

Luke Humphries is set to take to the iconic Premier League stage tonight, just two months after his scintillating run to the PDC World Championship quarter-finals. ‘Cool Hand Luke’ is the latest of the PDC Premier League contenders to make their debut. Humphries will face in-form Welshman Gerwyn Price, who enters night four after claiming back-to-back Players Championship titles in Barnsley last weekend. Rising star Humphries has already proven that he can perform on the big stage, defeating the then reigning World Champion, Rob Cross in the last-16 at Alexandra Palace. This dazzling run under the lights also included victories over Dimitri van den Bergh, Stephen Bunting and Adam Hunt. The results at the Worlds helped rocket him up the PDC rankings in just his debut year as a PDC Tour Card holder - seeing him sat at 56th on the PDC Order of Merit. Luke earned his 2-year Tour Card by finishing top of the 2017 Development Tour and the Berkshire thrower has certainly grasped his opportunity with both hands, with fine performances on the European Tour and Pro Tour throughout 2018. Focus now shifts to Exeter, where Luke will attempt to become the first of the Premier League contenders to pick up a victory. In a recent interview with the PDC, Luke stated "I'm out to show everyone that my performances at the Worlds weren't a flash in the pan." "You never know how you're going to adapt to the big stage and playing on TV but I adapted to it really well, and looking back it was a great feeling to be able to do something I never thought I would be able to do.” Chris Dobey has produced the best result of the contenders so far, in the opening week he earned a draw against Mensur Suljovic. Since then both Glen Durrant and Steve Lennon have fallen to 7-3 and 7-5 defeats respectively. Gerwyn Price stands between Luke and his winning contenders bonus, who himself is unbeaten in the Premier League and is undoubtedly the in-form player at the moment.
