Peter Wright backs MvG Comeback

Peter has warned the oche elite never to “write off” Michael van Gerwen after his shock Unibet Premier League exit.

The World Champion admits that he wants to take over the Dutchman’s mantle as the World No.1 over the coming months.

But Wright, 50, is well aware that there is likely to be a huge backlash from MVG after his struggles in Milton Keynes last week.

There’s no doubt all eyes will be on Van Gerwen’s form in the Autumn Series in Niedernhausen, Germany this weekend.

Wright said: “He has taken over the role of Taylor for a few years, but now there are more and more players who can put pressure on him, he has not been used to that for a long time. The level has risen very quickly in recent years, you also notice that in the floor tournaments.

“It’s obviously been a tough time for Michael in this new way of doing the Premier League. We’re obviously not used to it day after day.

“It’s very difficult, you haven’t got time to set yourself as a player for the following week like we normally do. Maybe he’s found it tougher than the rest of us. Which is strange because I I thought he would have thrived on it.

“He’s a proper professional, he’s the World No.1 and he’ll go back to drawing board and work himself back, never write him off.

“I want to be World No.1 but I want to be younger, that would have been nice.

“I would have been happy with fourth place but getting second that’s really good. At least I can prepare myself for finals night now.”
