Robert Thornton burst back into top form with a scintillating perfect nine dart finish against Poland’s Kryzstof Ratajski on Sunday, nailing double 12 to go 4-1 up in his last 16 clash.
The Thorn has had a relatively quiet time of late for a man of his talent and superb PDC record. The 11-times tour winner and treble major holder was overjoyed to have nailed another nine-darter.
Robert said “I’ve had a really tough time of late, but things have got better and I’ve continued working really hard on my game, so this weekend is a real step in the right direction for my game. I hadn’t changed my darts for ages and remembered that one of the reasons I went to this heavy knurl was so that I could feel the really aggressive grip under pressure when I needed it most. So I asked the team at Red Dragon to send a few new sets and clearly they’ve done the job.”
Roberts throwing action hasn’t changed for decades and he stills possess one of the most sublime throws in World darts. Stephen Feeney, SightRight Global coach, said “Robert’s throw is simply a thing of technical beauty to watch where he approaches every throw from an almost perfectly sighted position, and all he need do is work on the confidence side of his game.”
Robert now has a short break from PDC action, but will head into the next PDC ranking events full of confidence after reaching the Player Championship 16 semi-final, including a huge win over current World no.1 Michael van Gerwen.
