Red Dragon Darts today announced that it has extended its long-term sponsorship of two-time major winner, Robert ‘The Thorn’ Thornton until 2022.
Thornton, who is currently ranked 14 in the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) Order of Merit, has been supported by the company since 2010. During that time, the 49 year-old Scot has won the 2012 UK Open and 2015 World Grand Prix titles, beating Phil Taylor and Michael van Gerwen in the respective finals.
As a Red Dragon Darts player, Thornton will continue to contribute to the development of his range of 22g – 28g steel tip darts and 18g softip darts, as well as other equipment in the company’s range.
“We’d wanted to sign Robert ever since he won the 2007 Winmau World Masters,” says Simon Hall, Head of Marketing at Red Dragon Darts. “Eventually we got him in 2010 and he has been fantastic to work with ever since. He knows exactly what he wants from his equipment and pushes our technicians hard to create the darts that enable him to be one of the heaviest scorers in the game.”
That ability to hit the big scores and smash in 180s seemingly at will was demonstrated at the 2014 PDC World Grand Prix where he and James Wade made history by hitting double-in nine-darters in the same match.
“Robert simply has one of the best throws in the game and when he’s on, he’s one of the most feared players in the game,” says Hall. “Robert has been an absolute pleasure to work with over the last seven years and to say we’re happy he’s stayed with Red Dragon Darts is an understatement.”
Thornton added: “Top flight darts is a brutal business. The schedule is punishing and the competition is white hot. To have any chance of succeeding you have to have the backing of sponsors who want to do more than simply be associated with your name. Red Dragon Darts has been amazing. Their passion for the game and desire to help me get the most from my game has been humbling at times. Signing up for another five years was one of the easiest decisions I have ever had to make.”
