Thornton believes Scotland have to "Click"

EXCLUSIVE Robert Thornton believes that Scotland pair Gary Anderson and Peter Wright need to “click” to win the Betway World Cup. The Thorn is adamant that No 1 seeds Ando and Snakebite have the ability to walk away with the title in Frankfurt this week. Scotland have a wretched record losing out to Spain, Northern Ireland and Singapore over the past few years - but Anderson and Wright did make the final losing out to England. Now Thornton reckons they need to find that momentum again when they face USA tonight. He said: “We’ve had a rollercoaster few years in the World Cup. “It’s just one of those weird formats that you either click or you don’t. It did one year for Gary and Peter and I hope they can again. “There’s absolutely no doubt they can win it if they are in the mood and get a bit of luck along the way. “But the biggest joy of the World Cup is that is throws up a few shocks along the way. I just wish it wouldn’t keep happening to Scotland! “Obviously the Dutch are the team to beat in my mind. Michael van Gerwen is almost unstoppable these days and Raymond van Barneveld always rises to the occasion. “But MVG does have the odd off night and Scotland need to be still in it in the latter stages to capitalise if they do slip up. “It would be an absolute dream if they could win it. We’ve got the best players we’ve had at any time in darts history, but we need to make the most of it. “I’ll be cheering on Gary and Peter, that’s for sure. Every pub in Scotland will be buzzing if they can pull it off.” Thornton is confident he will return to big form after being off the radar for some time - two years since his dramatic World Grand Prix win over MVG in Dublin. He added: “My practice has been great. I can’t wait to get back on the big stage. All the other players in the PDC are in the shadows a bit while the Premier League is on. “I’ve just been working harder than ever on the board and it feels really good. Now I just need to prove it in competition.” By Phil Lanning (@lannomedia)
