Pumped- up Peter Wright reckons his year has finally “kick-started” after lifting his second trophy in 72 hours.
Snakebite picked up the SAP Darts Slam in Frankfurt just two days after winning the World Cup with Gary Anderson for Scotland.
Wright was ironically drawn out to face Anderson in the quarter-finals and then KO’d his Dartan Army team-mate. He went onto beat Leighton Bennett and Raymond van Barneveld to take the trophy and now reckons his winning belief is back.
He said: “I think my year has finally kick-started. I’ve been playing some good darts and then I played some rubbish darts. I can’t explain it. Well I can because I’m using the wrong darts!
“But now I’m using the diamonds, trying and stick with them, hopefully fingers crossed. That will keep everyone happy and me happy.
“I’m obviously delighted to have another trophy. Ray gave me a really hard final which went down to a deciding leg. They were tough matches because this was one heck of a line-up. Winning can become a habit so I hope that continues.”
Wright and Anderson beat the Republic to be crowned World Champions in Hamburg on Saturday night and were relieved to finally end their runner-up hoodoo.
They had lost finals to England and Netherlands before Wright wrapped up victory against Steve Lennon on Sunday night.
Wright added: “It’s good to win it and not be runner-up again and again. It was tough because the Republic of Ireland were playing fantastic darts.
“But we got away with it and playing well throughout the tournament to pick up the trophy.
“It’s definitely one of the most special moments of my career to win for Scotland. In the past I’ve not performed maybe got too nervous, too tired and not dealt with the pressure correct.
“This year I said to myself when I went one-nil down in the final when I was playing William O’Connor ‘this is not happening again, we are not losing again’.
“I told myself off on the stage in my head ‘you are going to do this’ and we did!”
