WRIGHT PICKS UP WIN ON LAST DAY OF SUPER SERIES
For the second Super Series in a row, Peter Wright picked up the title on the last day, defeating Jonny Clayton 8-7 in the Final.
Snakebite is making a habit of winning on the last day of these Pro-Tour events. This is his third consecutive win on a Final day and his fourth of the year!
In the Final, World Matchplay champion Snakebite took on the Premier League champion Jonny Clayton, as the two most recent TV major winners faced off!
The Ferret had lost only seven legs in his six games to reach the final, but Jonny’s slow start allowed Snakebite to get the upper hand, before fighting back to level things up at four legs a piece.
Once again Peter kicked on to move within a leg of the game and once again Jonny came back at Peter, this time to force a deciding leg.
Ultimately, it was Snakebite who got over the line and lifted the Players Championship 23 title, wrapping the game up in an unusually one-sided deciding leg, where Peter dominated, scoring 320 points with his first 6 darts.
It was the perfect amend for Peter who lost in the Final of Players Championship 22 to Ryan Searle just 24 hours earlier.
Snakebite appeared in a confident mood all day, kicking things off with a 6-3 victory over Jack Main.
Round 2 saw him take on Joe Murnan, winning with a 6-4 win as he recorded his first ton-plus average of the day.
Round 3 was a 6-3 victory over Karel Sedlacek, before he matched the score line against Stephen Bunting in the Last 16.
Martin Schindler was next to fall as Peter beat him in the Quarter-Finals stage with a third 6-3 win in a row.
In the Semi-Final Peter faced another Red Dragon star in Jamie Hughes, Peter was pushed hard in this one but came through a 7-5 winner, booking his spot in the Final against Clayton.
For Jonny, his run to the Final was quite remarkable with the number of legs he lost totalling just six.
A First Round win over Glen Durrant was quickly followed by a 6-0 victory over Spain’s Jose Justicia.
Jonny then completed another pair of 6-1 wins, this time over Chris Dobey and William Borland.
The Ferret then took on the previous day’s winner, Ryan Searle and a 6-2 victory booked his place in the Last 4.
He then comfortably World Number four James Wade 7-2 to reach the final.
That brings an end to the Players Championship action ahead of the cut-off for qualification for October’s World Grand Prix.
However, the European Tour returns in September with the PDC’s first visit to Budapest with the Hungarian Darts Trophy (September 2nd-5th), before the Gibraltar Darts Trophy on September 24th-25th.
Players Championship action will then return with PDC Super Series 7 from October 19th-22nd.
