A Look Back In Time - 13.04.2005

In their latest premier division Kaliber BDO Inter Counties Championship fixture Warwickshire took on Lancashire at home at the Canley Sports and Social Club, Coventry and recorded their fourth win of the campaign. However, their win was mainly down to the tremendous performance of their ladies teams, both of whom chalked up fantastic 5-1 wins to help give the county a close 19-17 victory. Match awards went to Trina Gulliver (‘A’ 32.16) and Betty Sinnett (‘B’ 18.31).

The men’s ‘A’ side lost 8-4 with Tony Brown (30.67) their top man and for the ‘B’ it was Colin Laffar (27.24) as they went down 7-5.

In the last week of the season the Four Oaks and District League have been playing off their various finals. The Sprawson Singles title went to A.James (Midland Red) who beat  A.Stainfield (Yenton Exiles) 2-1. The Chairman’s Pairs was won by M and G.Gaughan, again by a 2-1 margin against W.Griffiths and D.Miller.

With a close 5-4 verdict Old Oscott Arrows beat Yenton Exiles in the final of the Brian Goodman Cup, while the Leopard had a convincing 8-1 success over Hardy Spicer to lift the Ken Rust Cup.

Played ten, won ten that’s the record so far for Robbie Earl in the Brookmeadow Individual League. Once again he opened up with a 3-0 win, this time it was Alan Smith on the receiving end, making it eight out of nine straight wins. He then beat Gareth Lomas 2-1to give him a points total of 48, fourteen more than his nearest rival Keith Kelly, who had 3-0 wins over Paul Hogan and John Whitehouse.

The match between Alan Smith and Mark Showering was a high scoring affair with both players hitting a maximum, Smith also scoring 121 and 4x100, to Showering’s 3x100, the 2-1 result went in favour of Smith. Robbie Earl aslo hit a 180 against Alan Smith.

It’s close at the top of  division one of the Harborne and District Winter League, the George are currently in pole position with 26 points from 15 games, their latest win being 6-4 over Smethwick Labour Club. Second in the table Midland Red did not play, have a game in hand on the leaders and are only two points behind. Quinborne Flights have a massive eight points cushion in division two with only three games to play. Cock Inn are second, but despite being eight points adrift have a game in hand are still mathematically able to catch Quinborne, that is if Quinborne lose their remaining games 9-0 and Cock Inn win theirs by the same margin. Not very likely!

D.Kelley (Toby Jug) helped his team to hand Malt Shovel a 9-0 whitewash by hitting a 180 and recording a nine darts game in the process, while Malt Shovel’s P.Taylor’s 160 break was to no avail.

In division one T.Price (RAFA) chalked up the highest possible break of 170 to pip his team mate A,Price who had a 160 break.

The league will be playing the quarter finals of their Sheldon Shield tomorrow night, the full draw being, British Telecom Club v Hen and Chickens, Pavilions v Glebe Community Centre, Vaughans v Shard End Social, Malt Shovel v Yardley Ex Service Colts.
