A Look Back In Time - Alan Towe 15.08.2001

Congratulations go to Kings Highway man J.Archer who has won the Harboren 401 Summer League Individual title. D.Johnson (George) took Archer the full distance in the final, but Archer remained cool and with the help of a 160 break won the contest 2-1.

Losing semi-finalists were S.Wenlock (Hobsons Choice) who lost to the champion and T.McGlone from Midland Red. McGlone however, gained some comfort from his defeat when he teamed up with D.Bourne to lift the doubles title. With a 2-0 win over team mates P.Brotherton and G.Smith in the semi’s McGlone and Bourne chalked up a similar win over V.Gould and B.Johnson (George) in the final. T.Parsons and T.Hamilton (Raven) also reached the last four.

On the league front Midland Red remain unbeaten in division one following their 6-3 victory at home to Ladywood Social. Red’s G.Smith and S.Watson both hit maximums. D.Johnson also recorded a 180 for the George as they romped home to an 8-1 success at Bartley Green F.C. B.Hughes (Highlander) hit a maximum as his side went down 6-3 at home to the Raven whose T.Parsons had two 150 breaks.

As the winning post gets ever closer Dave Shorthouse, reigning champion of the Minworth Social Individual League, continues to lead the field. A 3-0 win over Lee Griffiths gives Shorthouse a total of 108 points, three more than second placed Richard Shenton who also had a 3-0 win against Bill Kirkland.

Top shots with a maximum score this week are, Barry Stephens (2), Richie Shenton, Steve Davis, Steve Hawkes, Brian Brooks, Dave Shorthouse, Dave Downes, Tony Whitehouse and Scott Mitton.

It’s still neck and neck at the top of the Small Heath Summer League with Saltley Flights and Sheldon Heath Flights both on 16 points from nine games, Saltley having the edge on average. In their latest round of fixtures Saltley had a crunching 9-0 win over third placed Black Horse, while Sheldon won 702 at Custard House ‘B’.

The winning number for the league’s “Dartt’o” game are 1st 202 (serial No RSW000034) £29.00, 2nd 134 (serial No 997321) £17.00, 3rd 43 (serial No CC997383) £12.00.

The Bournbrook and Selly Oak Social Club was the setting for the South West Birmingham Clubs Summer League Mixed Doubles knockout. More than 35 pair’s turned out for the event with John Warman (Selly Oak Flights) and Karen Newey (Triplex) the eventual winners. After going one up against Dingle representatives Terry Cuff and Paula Draper, Cuff and Newey lost the second leg, but fought back to snatch a 2-1 victory.

In the league division one’s W.Oates (Tascos ‘B’) was in good form as he broke with 160 in his teams 4-3 win at the Dingle. Division three’s Moseley Cricket Club beat Kings Norton RBL Flights 4-3, only their second win of the campaign.

Mick O’Sullivan organised an evening of darts, including the Ace of Clubs and Gulp charity teams at the Emerald Club, Birmingham, in which in an effort to raise funds for St Marys Hospice, Small Heath, anyone took on anyone. The result was that a fabulous amount of £216 was raised, a great effort by everyone concerned.
