A Look Back In Time - Alan Towe 22.08.2001

In division one of the Harborne 401 Summer League Midland Red’s opponents Bartley Gree F.C. failed to turn out. As a result Red were awarded a 5-4 win, which was enough to guarantee them the league title. A 150 finish from Ladywood Social’s B.Poyner was not enough for his side to avoid a 6-3 defeat at the George.

In division two leaders Kings Highway recorded a 7-2 home win against Avenue Social, while second placed Stoes handed out a 9-0 whitewash to Stonehouse Ladies, the same margin by which Village Stump accounted for Highlander Ladies. In the local derby between Stonehouse and Stonehouse Flights the former won 7-2.

A 2-1 win over Dave Downes as seen Dave Shorthouse extend his lead at the top of the Minworth Social Individual League to seven points. Shorthouse now has 112 points from 28 games. However, he needs to keep an eye on second placed Richie (The Don) Sheldon who has two games in hand and two wins could see him take over the number one spot.

Congratulations to Dawn Barnes who not only chalked up a maximum in her game against Steve Hawkes but also beat Hawkes 2-1.Gordon Clinton, Alan Mayell, Steve Brindley, Barry Stephens and Steve Hine also found the three treble twenties.

Paul Cummings was certainly the man in form in the Sportsmans Rest Double Top League this week. First his game against Kevin Platt saw him hit a 180 and win 2-1. He then went one better against Steve Shenton, winning 3-0 and hitting 180,140,2x125,4x100 and recording a 15 darts leg. Finally he played Pat Koyce. Koyce hit a 180 but it was not enough to avoid a 2-1 defeat. Steve Cain was another player to hit a 180 as he finished on the wrong side of a 2-1 scoreline with Kevin Platt. Richie Shenton had a good game against Dave Platt with scoes of 3x140 and 3x100 plus a superb 147 game shot.

Something had to give in the Small Heath Summer League when the two top teams Sheldon Heath Flights and Saltley Flights met on Sheldons board. Both teams were locked together on 16 points with Sheldon top on average only. A 7-2 victory by the home team has now seen them open up a two points lead over their nearest rivals. Because of their defeat Saltley are now level on points with the Black Horse who had a 6-3 home win over Red Hill.

Tony Ryan is the new champion of the Selworthy Open. Playing in the fourth annual event, again organised by Cath and Alan Mayell, Ryan beat reigning champion Paul Burnham 2-1 in the semi’s and then with a similar margin won the final against Alan Blythe. Commiserations go to Alan Blythe who, for the second successive year has finished as runner up. Who knows perhaps it will be third time lucky!

In round two of the Forest of Arden Summer League’s Knockout Cup P.Jones (Harvester) broke with 160 in his teams 7-2 win over Stechford Social. Highwood also won 7-2 against Red Arrows, the size of the win a little surprising. The top score went to Solihull Borough Flights who beat Cock and Hens 9-0, Sheldon Heath Social progress to the next round with a 6-3 verdict against Old Bill and Bull.

On the league front in division ‘A’ Hobs Meadow had a tremendous 8-2 success at Sheldon Heath Social, while Harvester, with a 180 from P.Maund won 7-3 at home to Solihull Borough Flights whose J.Staite broke with 160. Also winning 7-2 was the Highwood who accounted for Stechford Social. K.Gibbs (Highwood) and A.Hinton (Stechford Social) both had 160 breaks.
