A West Midlands Round Up By Alan Towe

Thomas Bent began week fourteen in the Shirley Legion Double Top League with a 2-2 draw with Dave Heighway and then added a 3-1 win over Mark Henderson to take his points tally to 66 from 22 games. Mick Bown has moved up six places in the table to replace Lee Harris in the number two spot after he kicked off his four games with a 2-2 draw with John O’Sullivan, had a 3-1 win over Lee Harris and followed that with 4-0 wins against Steve Heeks and Steve Sidwell to give him 63 points from 24 games, three points short of Bent.

Lee Harris recovered from his defeat by Bown to beat Tony Daly 4-0 to leave him just one points behind Bown in third place with two games in hand.

Craig Clarke dropped one place in the table to fourth with 61 points from 23 games after being held to a 2-2 draw by Ben Quadri.

The best leg of darts this week was nine achieved by Kyle Bevan, Gary Cleverley and Adam Stuart while the highest break of 160 was supplied by Brian Lawton.

The top two teams in the Small Heath League East Birmingham Allotment Holders Association and Heartlands Club both won this week to take their undefeated run to three games. E.B.A.H.A. top the table on average which was increased as they handed out a 9-0 whitewash to their hosts Wagon and Horses. Second placed Heartlands had a 7-2 success at home against bottom of the table Cob’s Bar, Heartlands Brendan Lysaght in top form as he chalked up scores of two maximums, 2x100 plus a 100 break and a nine darts game.  

The top two teams have a four points lead over Emerald Club, Wagon and Horses and Sheldon Marlborough Flights.

There were just two rearranged fixtures played in the Camp Hill League in which Roost Rebels won 5-2 at New Inn to see them move up into second place in the table just two points short of leaders White Swan Nomads, Rebels replacing Sheldon Marlborough Flights who are now two points behind them and four off the top in third place. In the other fixture Emerald Club had a closer 4-3 win over Station Wagon.

It was cup week in the Sutton and District Summer League, first the quarter finals of their Prestridge Shield in which second in division one Boldmere St Mike’s won 7-2 against Old Oscott Arrows who are top of division two. Division one leaders Golden Hind had a similar 7-2 results against Pint Pot Flights who are next to bottom of the same division. Division two teams Bishop Vesey and Walmley Darts Club both had close 5-4 wins, Vesey beating fellow division two rivals Red Lion while Walmley defeated division one side Boldmere Tap.

In the last eight of the Roy Bird Shield division one side Boat had a comfortable 8-1 win away to division three outfit St Thomas Arrows while the other division side Oscott Social who are bottom of the division lost 6-3 away to The Boot from division two. Division two’s bottom team Drakes Drum went out by the same 6-3 margin to Castle Vale Residents who top division three and it was Sutton Sports who won the all division three affair against Rosey Mac’s 5-4.

The Shirley and District Monday Night League is up to week 13 and the results for the week had no impact whatsoever on the top six places as leaders Dunky’s Boys made it twelve straight wins with a 7-2 win over Bluebell, second placed Lodge won 8-1 at Legion Royals, third in the table Highwood had a bye, fourth placed Lions had an 8-1 win over Red Lion, fifth team Bears were 5-4 winners at Cider House and sixth in the table Wharf beat Saracens Misfits 7-2.

With 24 points from 12 games Dunky’s have a two point’s lead and a game in hand on Lodge with Highwood and Lions two points adrift of Lodge but from one game fewer. Bears have 18 points from 12 games and Wharf 16 from 13 games.

The Stourbridge and District Monday Night League have got their new season underway and the early pacesetters are Bird (Wordsley) and British Oak who in turn had 8-1 wins over Church Tavern and Gigmill. Reigning league champions Brickmakers Arms are in joint third place, they won 7-2 against Rose and Crown (Wordsley) to put them level on points and average with Britannia, Hop House and last season’s runners-up Ten Arches, Brittania winning at home against Gate Hangs Well, Hop House away to Fox Inn (Lye) and Ten Arches won their home tie with Bird (Stourbridge).

The top two teams in the Brierley Hill Monday Night League clashed in week nineteen, leaders Dudley Ex Serviceman’s Club playing hosts to their nearest rivals Roebuck. The outcome was a close 5-4 win for the Ex Serviceman’s Club to see them open up a two points lead over both Roebuck and third placed Rose and Crown who had a 6-3 win at Dudley Sports ‘A’.

Former leaders and currently placed fourth High Oak lost more ground as they went down 5-4 at home to seventh in the table Delph Bell, High Oak are now six points off the top of the table.

Townsend Social Club were the only losers in the top four teams in the Netherton Thursday Night League as they lost their home tie with league leaders Dudley Ex Serviceman’s Club 7-2. Second in the league Bulls Head also had a 7-2 win playing at home against bottom of the table Saracens Head to remain nine points behind the leaders as are third in the table Riddins Tavern who won their home tie with White Horse 6-3.

There was a shock for top of the Hilltop Friendly Tuesday Night League table Tipton Sports when for the first time in 16 games they lost. Playing away to tenth placed Dewdrop ‘B’ Tipton Sports returned on the wrong side of a 4-3 result however with 30 points they remain top of the table but now have to share it with The Vine whose 6-1 win against Hayes Social puts them level on points and average with Sports.

Another somewhat surprising result was the 5-2 win by Cottage Spring who despite being at the foot of the table won 5-2 away to Sportsman who are seventh in the league.

The Cradley Tuesday Night League had cup fixtures on their agenda and in the first leg of the Main Cup league leaders Brickmakers Arms ‘A’ handed their Hosts, middle of the table Riddins Tavern a 9-0 whitewash. The other game played was much closer with Plough beating Wheatsheaf 5-4.

In the Shadow Cup there were 6-3 wins for Dudley Labour Club, Netherton Sports and Social ‘A’ and Brickmakers Arms ‘B’ who in turn accounted for Malt Shovel, Bulls Head and Netherton Sports and Social ‘B’. Roost had a 5-4 win over Gate Hangs Well.

The Brierley Hill Friday Night League staged the second leg of round two of their League Cup and winning through with their average score in brackets were Delph Bell (8-6) against Miners, Wollescote, Netherton Cricket Club ‘A’ (8-4) against Ashwood, Brickmakers Arms ‘A’ (8-6) against High Oak and Dudley Sports (8-6) against Brickmakers Arms ‘B’.

A 4-4 draw for Dudley Ex Serviceman’s Club with New Talbot, who are just three places off the foot of the Silver End Sunday Morning League table was not enough for the Ex Serviceman’s Club to hold on to pole position as they slipped to second place one point behind Woodside ‘A’ who won 6-2 at home against fifth in the table Dudley Sports to put them top of the table.

Third in the league Glasscutters ‘B’ are on the same 30 points as the Ex Serviceman’s Club but trail on average after they won the local derby with their ‘A’ side 5-3.

After the top three teams comes a gap of four points to fourth placed Brickmakers Arms ‘B’ who took their points tally to 26 when they won 5-3 away to Kings Head ‘A’, but in addition to their points deficit they have also played one game more than all of the teams above them.

There were 7-2 wins for three of the top four teams in the Harborne and District League in week six, leaders Longbridge Social Club and second placed Copper Fox were two of the three as they in turn defeated Island Inn Darts and Bugle Horn. Both of the top two have won all of their games so far, Longbridge who have played six games compared to the five of Copper Fox topping the table.

Third in the league Cock Inn were 6-3 winners at home against Stag and Three Horseshoes while making up the three 7-2 wins was The Bear who won at Weoley Castle Pub.

The biggest question now in the Pip Club League is whether or not Bombay Bob’s Boys will go through the season undefeated as they took their unbeaten run to 23 games with a crushing 9-0 result over Wigginton Arms. The win keeps Bombay top of the Main table with 46 points three more than second placed Belgrave Sports and Social Club and with a game in hand. Belgrave Sports and Social had a 7-2 win at Globe (Wilnecote) with the home player Rick Martin notching two maximums. Third in the table Birchmoor Club kept the pressure on Belgrave, their 6-3 win at Glascote Club keeping them within one point of them.

The Tettenhall Wednesday Night League have been engaged in their Consolation and Knockout Cups, in the former Pilot had a close 8-7 aggregate win over Royal, Albrighton with Swan at Compton, Brewood British Legion and Cleveland Arms having a bye.

In the Knockout Cup ECC Club were dominant with the ‘A’ team beating Dog and Partridge 8-5 and the ‘B’ side winning 10-4 against Moreton. Whitmore Reans were 11-3 winners against Bull while Hurst Hill had a bye into the next round.

The West Midlands Men’s Super League have got their new season underway and from last season’s eighteen finishers seven teams have dropped out Allen’s Sports Bar ‘D’, Cradley Sports and Social, Crown, Hill and Cakemore, King Arthur, Landywood and Victoria but there are five new teams Bell, ECC Club, Griffin, a second Horse and Jockey team and a second Yeltz Bar team to take the starting line-up to sixteen.

Beginning the new season where they left off are reigning champions Allen’s Sports Bar ‘A’ who with 33 wins from 34 games last season began with a 4-1 win over Staffordshire Knot thanks to wins from Dan Nicholls, Scott Baker, Nick Fullwell and Alfie Jacques.

Game number two saw Allen’s ‘A’ go one better winning 5-0 against Gunners Club thanks to Nick Fullwell, Scott Baker, Alfie Jacques, Adam Edgar and Dan Nicholls  

The two wins have put Allen’s Sports Bar ‘A’ top of the table with 13 points, however they only lead on average as both Bridgtown Social and Woodside Inn are on the same thirteen points and last season’s runners-up Yelta Bar (this season Yeltz Bar ‘A’) are fourth and only one point behind the top three after their 4-1 wins over Cabin and Staffordshire Knot.
