Article: Yozza set to Rock the World Matchplay

Yozza set to Rock the World Matchplay

Tipton’s Jamie Hughes is ready to make a sensational World Matchplay debut this weekend, just 7 months after earning his PDC Tour Card.

‘Yozza’ completed an astonishing run at the inaugural Czech Darts Open 3 weeks ago, culminating in a stunning 8-3 final win over Stephen Bunting.

That victory scooped Hughes a £25,000 winner’s cheque, which also snuck him into qualification for the Betfred World Matchplay at the first time of asking.

Queen’s famous anthem “We will rock you” has been Jamie’s walk-on music of choice for his PDC journey, and it truly has been rocking the European Tour circuit with a semi-final and quarter-final appearance along with his ranking title win.

It wasn’t all plain sailing on Hughes’ switch from the BDO to the PDC however, as Jamie missed out on a Tour Card on his first attempt in 2018.

A former BDO World Championship semi-finalist and Winmau World Master runner-up, Hughes has more than shown he has the class and ability to mix it with the best in the PDC.

Despite missing out on a spot on the ProTour last year, Jamie bit straight back with a mind-blowing 125.30 average to qualify for the first European Tour event that year, as he dominated Robbie Green away 6-0.

Yozza has since then cemented himself firmly in the top 10 of ProTour averages this year and the Black Country ace backs himself to go all the way in Blackpool.

"To make the World Matchplay so soon is fantastic for me and now I can't wait to show the World what I'm about on one of the biggest stages in World darts" stated Hughes

“There’s no reason I can’t go deep in Blackpool, or even win it. I know if I keep playing my best that the results will follow and who knows what could happen” Michael Smith is the first round opponent who he will face in Blackpool, closing Sunday’s afternoon session on 21st July.
