Alan Towe's The Line - 24.10.24

As early as fixture number two and the Cosmo Darts Premier Division of the UKDA National League has produced a major shock, in fact two shocks as both the reigning champions Lancashire and runners-up Yorkshire both lost. With home advantage Lancashire played against last season’s third placed Warwickshire and lost 19-17 while Yorkshire had an away game against Essex and returned on the wrong side of the 20-16 result. Lancashire finished all-square in three of their games, the ladies ‘A’ and ‘B’ and the men’s ‘A’ but the men’s ‘B’ went down 7-5 to give Warwickshire the points. Yorkshire had a 6-6 draw in the men’s ‘A’ game while the ‘B’ side won 8-4. There was defeat for both the ladies teams, the ‘B’ losing 4-2 and the ‘A’ suffering a 6-0 whitewash.

Taking over from Yorkshire in pole position is Cornwall who followed up their opening win at Warwickshire with a 21-15 home win over Hampshire to put them on forty-seven points, six more than Lancashire in second place and Yorkshire in third place who both have forty-one points as do London who are placed fourth after they won 22-14 in their home tie with Glamorgan.

On the individual scene top averages for both the men’s and ladies ‘A’ teams went to Cornwall’s Gareth Griffiths and Maria O’Brien, Gareth winning 4-0 against Hampshire’s Luke Getty with a 31.81 average and Maria accounting for Jane Monaghan (Hampshire) with a superb 27.33 average. Top ‘B’ team players were Tony Darlow (Yorkshire) who averaged 31.60 in a 4-1 win over Essex player Matt Gordon and Hampshire’s Laura Turner who had a 23.71 average in her 3-1 win over Nikki Furse (Cornwall).

A 19-17 away win over Derbyshire keeps Suffolk top of the Andy Wheeler Fisheries Championship Division, they have opened up a gap of five points between themselves and second and third placed Humberside and Oxfordshire. Both Humberside and Oxfordshire have been involved in playing two fixtures, the first against each other which ended in an 18-18 draw and the second for Humberside saw them win 21-15 away to Staffordshire while Oxfordshire won by the same margin at home against Cambridgeshire. After the top three is Kent who after their opening 21-15 win over Derbyshire lost 20-16 at Northamptonshire to put them on forty points.

Chalking up top averages for the Championship were for the men’s ‘A’ Lee Parish (Humberside) who averaged 31.76 in his 4-3 win over Staffordshire’s Callum Matthews and for the men’s ‘B’ it was Humberside once again with Lee Smith beating Trevor Carter (Staffordshire) 4-2 with a 30.00 average. The ladies with the top average were Deta Hedman (Oxfordshire) with her 3-1 win and 23.95 average over Barbara Greatbatch (Cambridgeshire) and taking the ‘B’ award was Derbyshire’s Rach Bird with a 21.47 average and 3-0 win against Suffolk’s Leanne Hadfield.

Middlesex followed up their opening day 23-13 home win over Clwyd with an 18-18 draw at Somerset to keep them top of the L.Style Division One table with forty-five points while Merseyside, who had a bye slipped down from second place to ninth with Leicestershire moving up from sixth to take over the number two spot after winning 21-15 at home against Berkshire to leave them five points behind Middlesex. A 22-14 home win from Clwyd over West Midlands has seen the home team leap from eighth to third in the table on thirty-eight points while their opponents who were playing their first game of the season slipped to bottom of the table.

A 32.32 average and a straight 4-0 win over Darren Herbert (Somerset) saw Martin Lukeman (Middlesex) top the men’s ‘A’ averages while a superb 29.47 average from Buckinghamshire’s Fallon Sherrock plus her 3-0 win over Devon’s Karen Matthews made her the top player in ladies ‘A’ games. The men’s ‘B’ top player was Cleveland’s Mark Muckian, a 29.90 average and a 4-1 result over Black Country’s John Green earning him the accolade. Clwyd’s Alex Foulds topped the ladies ‘B’ charts with her 3-0 win and 20.04 average in her win over West Midlands Debbie Davies.

Tyne and Wear’s second fixture in division two was an away game against Worcestershire with the home side recording a 22-14 win to knock their visitors off pole position in the division and replace them at the top of the table. With forty-eight points Worcestershire have a slender one point advantage over County Durham who hold on to the number two spot following their 20-16 win at Wiltshire. Surrey won their home tie with Cumbria 19-17 but despite their win drop one place to fourth with Salopian replacing them in third place after their 20-16 home win over Northumberland. Salopian and Surrey are both on forty-five points.

County Durham’s Jack Bell had the division’s top average in the men’s ‘A’ games, recording a 32.08 average in his 4-3 win over Wiltshire’s Chris Bailey. Salopian’s Steph Clarke had the top ladies ‘A’ average which was 21.61 in her 3-1 win over Northumberland’s Toni Longstaff. In the ‘B’ games James Tate (Northumberland) and Cat Mackie (Wiltshire) took the honours, Tate beating Tony Middleton (Salopian) 4-1 with a 27.01 average while Mackie accounted for Suzanne Nixon (County Durham with 3-2 result and 17.58 average.

There is no change at the top of division three with the top three teams all holding on to their places in the table. Wirral continue in the number one spot after winning 23-13 at West of England. Hot on the heels of the leaders and on the same fifty-four points is second in the division Norfolk who went one better and won 24-12 at Shropshire. Making up the top three is Breconshire who suffered a close 19-17 home defeat at the hands of the Gloucestershire team and although they lost they still hold a seven point’s lead on fourth in the table Montgomery and Radnor.

Just two teams had the lion’s share of the top averages in division three, Gloucestershire having both the ladies ‘A’ and ‘B’ awards thanks to Vicky Parmley (22.77) and Jane Price (20.88) who in turn won 3-0 against Breconshire’s Chris Sheen and Louise Davies, Jane Price sharing the top average with Montgomery and Radnor’s Katie Bellerby who beat Jules Inman (Isle of Wight) 3-0. The men’s ‘A’ awards went to Montgomery and Radnor’s Steve Price who beat Isle of Wight’s David Spragg 4-1 and averaged 31.06 while the ‘B’ award went to Wirral’s Darren Bradley who had a 4-0 win over West of England’s Zach Quinn and averaged 29.47

After suffering an opening day 20-16 home defeat to Cornwall in the Cosmo Darts Premier Division of the UKDA National League Warwickshire then had the daunting task of playing away against reigning champions Lancashire, never an easy fixture, However the weekend the weekend got off to quite a good start for the away side as the ladies ‘B’ after going one down when Doreen Fitton (Lancashire) won 3-0 against Chloe McKivett-Saunders then opened up a 2-1 lead as Nina Bolt accounted for Ann Marie Millership with a 3-1 result and Caroline Pike, Warwickshire’s lady of the match beat Gina Jones 3-2 with an 18.82 average. From 2-1 up the away side then found themselves trailing 3-2 as Natasha Eaves and Tanya Brenner in turn won 3-2 against Jodie Rigg and Denise Keyte to leave the result all-dependant on the final game. Once again the sixth encounter went the full five legs distance with Donna Pinch wining 3-2 against Tracey Cunningham to secure a share of the points for Warwickshire taking the final score to 3-3.

The first four games of the men’s ‘B’ match all went in favour of the first throw advantage with Jnr Joyce giving the visitors the early lead when he won 4-2 against Rob Rickwood, Simon Wilkinson cancelling out the lead when he beat Samuel Price 4-1. Warwickshire’s man of the match Wayne Mynard restored the lead for Warwickshire when he chalked up a straight 4-0 win over Jason Longmate with a 29.91 average, however for a second time parity was restored and once again it was a 4-1 result going to the home team when Ant Hitchmough won against Noah Rose. For the first time in the game Lancashire went ahead in the fifth when Callum Schofield beat Mark Faulkner 4-0 and with a further 4-1 win for Peter Day over Adam Hancock the hosts were 4-2 up at the midway points of the match.

The first game of the second half saw Dave Hill (Warwickshire) go one up against Steve Green but then 2-1 down as Green won the next two legs. Hill came fighting back and with winning legs of 18,16 and 15 darts went on to win 4-3. Mark Martin went 1-0 down to James Caton and was pegged back to level terms in the sixth after he had gone 3-1 up. But he then went on to win the game 4-3 to restore parity for a third time in the match. William Naylor trailed 2-0 and 3-1 to Mick Oversby but finished the 4-3 winner to give Warwickshire the lead for a third time and with a further 4-0 success for Mark Strong over Martin Lomas Warwickshire with a 6-4 lead were in an unassailable lead and required just one more win for victory. The man providing that winning game was Karl Reynolds who came from one down to Lee Wilson and went on to win 4-1 to take Warwickshire’s lead to 7-4. The last game of the day saw Lancashire’s Ryan Robinson win 4-1 against Leigh Dells to take the final score to 7-5 in Warwickshire’s favour and an overall 108 lead to take into Sunday’s games.

Wendy Adams was first on for the ladies ‘A’, she came back from 2-0 down to Jenny Nuttall to go on and win 3-2. Marian Conway, like her team mate Wendy Adams, also trailed 2-0 and although she pulled back to level terms it was Lancashire’s Jo Clements who got the 3-2 result. A 3-0 win for Dawn Shaw over Kirsty Hinchliffe gave the home team a 2-1 lead which was quickly erased as Hannah Meek beat Eleanor Cairns 3-1 to take the score to 2-2. The home side’s lady of the match Ally Smith (21.30) put her team within an ace of victory when she won 3-1 against Nina Bolt but a tremendous effort from Natalie Gilbert in the last game earned Warwickshire a share of the spoils when she won 3-2 against Audrey Underwood with a superb 23.43 average which earned Natalie the team’s match award.

The first game of the men’s ‘A’ match saw Gary Davey put Lancashire ahead as he won 4-1 against Nigel Heydon with 146 and 155 out shots. Steve Hine’s 4-2 win over Lee Shewan levelled the game before Warwickshire went ahead in the third when Matty Washbrooke won 4-3 against Gary Jackson after Jackson had won the first leg and dawn level in the sixth. Andy Cass (Lancashire) looked all set to make it 2-2 when he opened up a 3-0 lead over Jamie Atkins but Atkins stuck to the task and with wins in the next four legs in 14,17,18 and 18 darts won the tie 4-3. Danny Lauby took the away side’s lead to 4-1 with a 4-2 win over Steve Reynolds, David Evans reducing the arrears for Lancshire to 4-2 as he wrapped up the first half with a 4-2 win over Samuel Price.

The deficit was reduced even further as the second half began, Nathan Care winning 4-1 against Mark Carter and by the eighth game it was all square as David Airey won 4-2 against Noel Grant. A 4-2 win for Tom Cromwell against Sam Whittaker saw Lancashire take the lead for the first time since the winning opener but the home team’s lead was short-lived as Jack Wareing levelled the game when he won 4-2 against Sam Cromwell after Cromwell had gone 1-0 and 2-1 up. A share of the points was secured for Warwickshire when their man of the match Jamie Hughes won the penultimate encounter against Kev Garcia 4-0, Hughes winning the game with 21,17,14 and 13 darts legs giving him a 30.83 average. Stu Wilson rescued a share of the spoils for Lancashire in the last game of the weekend when he won 4-1 against Martin Tonks to give a final score of 6-6.

The overall result for the weekend was a tremendous 19-17 victory for Warwickshire but despite the fabulous win Warwickshire actually dropped one place in the table to seventh with thirty-eight points, nine short of leaders Cornwall but only three behind their second placed opponents.

---------------------------------

With their first fixture of the season, a home tie with neighbouring Black Country in the L-Style division one of the UKDA National League West Midlands first actual game was an away fixture against newly promoted from division two Clwyd who lost their opener away to Middlesex 23-13.

The home team were first out of the blacks in the ladies ‘B’ match, Hayley Street wining 3-1 against Kelly Doleman. West Midland’s lady of the match Shellbie Simmons (15.34) levelled the score when she won 3-1 against Jayne Andrews before the hosts rattled off two consecutive 3-0 wins from Del Stapley and Alex Foulds who in turn accounted for Julie Emery and Debie Davies. The home team’s advantage was reduced to 3-2 in the fifth when Gemma Barrett won 3-2 against Abby Hamilton only to see Clwyd’s Rachael Simpson win the last game 3-1 against Hannah Davies to give her team the 4-2 result.

The men’s ‘B’, like the ladies ‘B’, lost the first and then won the second as Andrew Ingman began the match with a 4-1 win over Anthony Whitehouse and Will Beadon levelled for West Midlands when he won by the same 4-1 margin against Paul Gillam. The remainder of the first half all went to Clwyd as Paul Caveney and Mark Leach in turn won 4-2 against Kieran O’Mahoney and Ian Stanton and Steve Probert and Daniel Stapleton both had straight 4-0 wins over their respective opponents Luke Griffiths and Adam Teasdale to put the hosts 5-1 at the break.

It was a better start to the second session for the Midlanders as Karl Hughes won 4-2 against Chris Moore and Martin Price won 4-3 against Andy Hopwood. The home side went 6-3 up in the ninth when Jodie Challinor beat Mark Craddock 4-2 before the away team took the remaining three games with straight 4-0 wins from Shane Price, Glen McGrandle and Ash Khayat who had wins in turn over Bradley Roberts, Craig Billingsley and Chris Dobbins to secure a hard-fought 6-6 draw for the West Midlands. Taking the team’s match award was Ash Khayat who in his win over Chris Dobbins recorded a 29.47 average.

It was not a good weekend for the ladies as after the ‘B’ side lost 4-2 the ‘A’ team went down 5-1, their sole winner coming in the first game as Evonne Taylor won 3-2 against Nia Price with a 16.13 average. Clwyd then won the following five games with wins from Bethan Jones, Nat Davey, Leanne Topper, Rachel Kingdon and Judith Williams who accounted for respective opponents Jodie Rowlands (3-2), Jacqueline Trott (3-2), Tara Simmons-Fullwood (3-0), Jacqueline Maiden (3-0) and Sarah Maybury (3-0).

A 4-2 win from Shaun Thompson over Karl Hughes gave Clwyd the early lead, that lead doubled in the second game when Phil Jones beat Michael Baker 4-3. Rob Thompson halved the deficit when he won the third game against Nick Hailes 4-1 only to see the home side then add wins from both Cole Davey and Jon Darlington as they won 4-1 and 4-3 in turn against Dean Simmons-Fullwood and Ryan O’Connor. By the midway point the score was 4-2 to the home team after Kevin Bambrick won the last game of the half against Gareth Killa 4-3.

From 4-2 up the hosts then moved into an unassailable 6-2 lead as Derek Williams and David Davies added their 4-3 wins over Jack Aldridge and Darren Williams to their account. Game number nine produced the West Midlands man of the match in the form of Shaun Carroll who won 4-2 against Rob Lawrence with a 29.47 average and with a further 4-0 win from Richard Platt over Ben Walley a draw for the Midlanders was still within reach. Any hopes of that draw were dismissed in the penultimate encounter as Luke Smith won 4-1 against Ian Jones to assure Clwyd men’s ‘A’ of the win. The last game of the weekend saw Gavin Baker (West Midlands) win 4-0 against Phil Hughes to take the final score to 7-5 to Clwyd.

. The overall weekend’s result was 22-14 to Clwyd which saw them move up five places in the table to third on thirty-eight points, seven short of leaders Middlesex while West Midlands, who have only played one fixture, are rooted to the bottom of the table with fourteen points.

---------------------------------

With their first fixture away to West Midlands postponed the first game played by the Black Country in the L-Style Division one was a home tie against Cleveland. The first of the ladies ‘B’ games went to the away side as their Sonia Mager beat Stella Sims 3-2. That, however was to be the one and only game the visitors would get from the match as the home team then added three straight 3-0 win by Grace Angell, Amy-Leigh Tolley and Doreen Hunt over Leanne Witten, Sam Dixon and Debbie Liddell with Doreen Hunt taking the match award for her 16.70 average and two 3-1 wins from Sarah Jane Parker and Kirsty Shaughnessy  at the expense of Shirley Witten and Marlene Huby to give Black Country a 5-1 win.

The men’s ‘B’, like the ladies ‘B’ also went one down as Mark Muckian beat John Green 4-1 but the lead was quickly reversed as Rich Bowen, Wayne Hobday and Al Smith won 4-2 against their respective opponents Jake Harland, Matthew Helyer and Simon Ashton to put the home team 3-1 up. However by the halfway stage the scoreline was level at three each after Colin Peacock beat Ian Townsend 4-1 and Cameron Nicholson won 4-3 against Neil Steventon.

Black Country forged ahead again as the second half got underway Sam Bissell winning 4-0 against Steven Wilkinson and Rob Smith accounting for Tony Liddell with his 4-2 win. Taking the running score to 6-3 was Kieron Bridgwater who won 4-0 against Michael Margretts and with a 4-1 win over Chris Sheraton from James Hykin, who took the man of the match award for his 28.46 average, the home team were in a winning 7-3 position. Liam Green-Sherlock pulled one back for Cleveland when he beat Mark Jones 4-2 but with a 4-3 win for Dave Edwards against Gareth Cox, the final score was 8-4 to Black Country.

What better way to start a game than to storm into an unassailable 4-0 lead, and that’s exactly what Black Country ladies did. The opening two ladies Abbey Hunt and Chez Allcock chalked up 3-2 wins over Ann Marie Potts and Amy Thomas before Maxine Prosser won 3-1 against Leanne Witten. Adding the winning fourth game in style with a lady of the match performance was Tammy Chance who had a straight 3-0 win over Sonia Mager and averaged 16.89. The last two games both finished with 3-1 scorelines and went to Cleveland’s Frances Elwick and Claire Stamper who in turn won against Paige Robbins and Heather Wright to give a final score of 4-2 to the hosts.

The majority of the first half of the men’s ‘A’ game belonged to Black Country as they romped to a 5-1 lead thanks to Alex Howells, Paul Wells, Tom Bissell, Trev Brennan and Dan Homer who in turn accounted for Graham Palmer (4-3), Mark Muckian (4-1), Barry Davies (4-2), Cameron Nicholson (4-1) and Dave Hunter (4-1). Cleveland’s sole winner in the first half was Brian Henderson on at number five against Jamie Barrowman, a game which he won 4-0.

Cleveland clawed their way back into the game as the second session got underway, Geoffrey Burdon winning 4-2 against Michael Powell and Jamie Owens beating Steve Jones by 4-1 to reduce the arrears to 5-3. Jamie Rollinson (Black Country) confirmed at the worst a draw for the hosts as he won 4-2 against Mick Costello before the win was achieved in the tenth when man of the match Liam Kelly beat Chris Sheraton 4-0 with a super 30.83 average. The last two games of the day went to Cleveland as Rob Grundy won 4-0 against George Willetts and Paul Allen beat Martin Greenwood 4-3 to take the final score to 7-5 to the Black Country.

The result for the weekend was 24-12 to Black Country to put them eighth in the league with twenty-seven points and although they trail the leaders by eighteen points they have a game in hand on all of the seven teams above them.

---------------------------------

In division two of the UKDA National League Salopian’s second fixture was a home tie with Northumberland, prior to the match the two teams were in respective fifth and eighth positions with six points the difference between the two teams.

The visitors went 1-0 up in the ladies ‘B’ game when their Toni Longstaff won 3-2 against Danni Pritchard, but from one down the hosts then roared into an unbeatable and winning 4-1 position as Paul Davies won 3-0 against Ange Best, Anna Peatroy beat Dawn Longstaff 3-1, Hayley McGuinness won by the same 3-1 margin against Mary Pattison and Claire Boyle accounted for Debbie Waugh with a further 3-1 win. Hayley McGuinness wining  the match award for her 16.28 average. The away side won the final game when their Kayla Herdman beat Chloe Ames 3-0 to take the result to 4-2 to Salopian.

The first six games of the men’s ‘B’ match was a tale of two halves in itself as Salopian won the first three games and Cleveland won the second three games. With 4-1 wins James Jenkins and Mick Unsworth won in turn against Tony Taylor and Lee Harrison and completing the host’s three wins was Dave Bayton with his 4-2 win over Ian Burt. Replying for Cleveland were Steve Jamieson, Russ Wood and James Tate who in turn won against Matt Maxfield (4-3), Dean Stokes (4-2) and Tony Middleton (4-1).

With honours shared in the first half the second half saw Salopian open up a 5-3 lead as Andy Gilbert beat Jamie Martin 4-2 and Jamie Chaplin won 4-0 against Richard Gerry. Ben Mather pulled one back for the away side when he won 4-3 against Steve O’Callaghan but two straight 4-0 wins from Eddie Price and Jon Mansell took the home side into a winning 7-4 position, Jon Mansell receiving the man of the match award for his 25.37 average against Gary Reed while Eddie Price had won against David Wallace. The last game of the day went to Dean Stackhouse (Cleveland) who had a 4-3 success in his game with Glyn Thomas to give a 7-5 result in Salopian’s favour.

With an opening 11-7 lead for Sunday’s fixtures the ladies ‘A’ extended that when they added their 4-2 result to the running score. The ladies ‘A’ match was virtually a repeat of the ladies ‘B’ with Cleveland winning the first and last games as they went down once again 4-2. Marie Silk gave the visitors the opening win as she beat Sue Lane 3-2, then came four wins in a row for Salopian as Julie Griffiths accounted for Lisa Barnes with a 3-2 result, Tracey Dean, Steph Clarke and Kate Tiley all won 3-1 in turn against Ang Turnbull, Toni Longstaff and Iyla Leightly with Steph Clarke lady of the match for her 21.61 average. Phonsawan Whillis (Cleveland) won the final game against Emma Tapp 3-1 to see Salopian’s ladies ‘A’ win 4-2.

What better way to start the men’s ‘A’ game than with a man of the match performance from Paul Rowley who in his 4-2 win over Dean Stackhouse averaged 27.87. Despite the fine win by Rowley the home crowd’s cheers were short-lived as Cleveland went from one down to lead 3-1 as Paul Richardson won 4-1 against Ben Bevan, Steve Jamieson beat Ash Hilditch 4-0 and Mark Stephenson won 4-2 against Mark Graham, Despite the setback the home team drew level by the halfway mark as Gary Crowther and Terry Nash won 4-3 in turn against Andy Parks and Daniel Stephenson.

Cleveland took the lead once again as the second half began, Billy Leonard beating Shane Hayward 4-2 but a 4-3 win for Jamie Kynaston over Chris Harvey levelled the game at 4-4 only to see the away side forge ahead again in the ninth when Paul Sinclair won 4-2 against Andy Evans. Shaun Pryce kept Salopian in the game when he added his 4-1 success over Russ Wood to their tally, restoring parity once again, the score now at 5-5. Unfortunately for the hosts Pryce was to be their last winner as Oliver Haughan won 4-3 against Dafydd Edwards and Ryan Branley won the last game of the weekend against Mark Crutchley 4-1 to give Cleveland’s men’s ‘A’ the 7-5 win.

The final score for the weekend was 20-16 to Salopian which sees them move up the table two places to third with forty-five points just three short of divisional leaders Worcestershire.

---------------------------------

Following their opening 22-14 win away to Gloucestershire in division three of the UKDA National League, Shropshire’s second fixture was a home tie with Norfolk who had opened their account with a 24-12 home win over West of England.

It was an encouraging start to the weekend as the ladies ‘B’ slipped to a 4-0 defeat before getting a stripe on the board, wins from Nikki Goldsmith, Lauren Wilson, Sandra Page and Claire Broom putting Norfolk in the driving seat as they in turn defeated Dianne Newton (3-0), Tanya Dolman (3-2), Lauren Kempson (3-0) and Gemma Smith (3-2). Deana Sheldon stopped the rot as she put up Shropshire’s first win when she accounted for Sue Brittain with a 3-2 result. For the second successive fixture Kirstie Millington took the ladies ‘B’ match award as she won 3-2 against Lisa Garman and averaged 14.30 to put the final score at 4-2 to Norfolk.

After the poor start by the ladies ‘B’ the men’s ‘B’ could not have had a better start as they kicked off with a man of the match performance from Rob Pierce who won 4-2 against Dave Olley with a 24.62 average. Unfortunately the lead was short-lived as Timothy Mann levelled for Norfolk when he won 4-2 against Paul Penfold. Shropshire went ahead again in the third thanks to a 4-3 win by Ethan Shaw who had a 4-3 win over Lewis Crowe but once again the visitors came bouncing back and with a 4-1 win for Darren Massen against Chris Evans parity was restored for a second time. The fifth encounter saw Norfolk take the lead for the first time in the game, a 4-0 success for Alfie Thompson over Jon Blakemore putting the away team 3-2 up. The lead for Norfolk was increased to 4-2 by the break after Evan Wilson added his 4-1 win against Josh Pickett to their account.

The first two games of the second half saw Norfolk move to within an ace of victory as Darren Goldsmith beat Neil Hansell 4-0 and Will Stanmore won 4-2 against Rob Pitt. Kye Simmonds momentarily reduced the arrears for Shropshire with his 4-1 win over Brian Goffart but the visitors got their win in the tenth when Paul Taylor won 4-2 against Reece Cook-Lucas. The last two games both finished with close 4-3 scorelines, both of them going to Norfolk as Matthew Hubbard beat Steve Blewitt and Aaron Taylor won against Mark Zambra to give a final score of 9-3 to Norfolk.

As it turned out Shropshire ladies ‘A’ team provided the one and only shining light of the weekend for the hosts as they chalked up a 4-2 win but not before they were 2-1 down. Opener Marie Riggs gave the home side the early lead when she won 3-1 against Amy Lincoln but replying for Norfolk were Ella Tovell and Nikki Goldsmith who had respective 3-1 and 3-0 wins over Sophie Ward and Michele Pritchard. The last three games produced 3-1 wins for Shropshire with Sarah Williams beating Mandy Gray, Nicola Ball winning against Lynsey Childs and Jenna-Louise Ball accounting for Elaine Blackett, the 21.35 average for Jenna-Louise Ball earning her the team’s match award.

As the men’s ‘A’ match got underway Norfolk stormed into a 4-0 lead with wins from Richard Stoddart, David Wilson, Chris Earll and Darren Brown who in turn defeated Kevin Harris (4-2), Chris Fox (4-1), Shane Passey (4-0) and Andrew Jervis (4-3). The visitors lead was reduced to 4-2 by the break as Ben Johnson beat James Goldsmith 4-3 and Richard Parker won 4-1 against Gary Knott, Parker, for the second consecutive fixture winning the match award, on this occasion he averaged 26.72.

The first three games of the second half went to Norfolk to put them into an unassailable position with a 7-2 lead. Adding further wins for the away team were Olly King, Vinny Mudd and Ollie Howard who in turn won against Adam Thackeray (4-2), Sam Aitkens (4-1) and Andre Knox (4-3).Andy Vellender took Shropshire’s tally to three winners when he won 4-1 against Kevin Rudling but the final score was taken to 9-3 to Norfolk when Peter Reynolds won 4-3 against Brian Dolman and James Hubbard beat Brett Cooper 4-1.

The 24-12 defeat for Shropshire has seen them drop one place to fifth in the division with thirty-seven points some seventeen fewer than the top two teams Wirral and Norfolk.
