Darts : Monty hits the bullseye

Greenhills darts player Ross Montgomery sealed the biggest victory of his career at the weekend when he defeated world No.1 Gary Anderson to win the England Open in Sussex.

Ross’s triumph in the final was the first time he had beaten his fellow Scot Anderson, and he also recorded a career first win over Ted ‘The Count’ Hankey of England in the last-16.

The tournament win moves Ross up to No.14 in the British Darts Organisation (BDO) world rankings, which puts him in with a great chance of qualifying for several televised events – including the world championships at the Lakeside country club.

He said: "It feels great. It didn’t really sink in until I got home on Sunday night and my wife logged on to the internet, where I saw the change to my ranking.

"It means I get invites to more tournaments now, which is great. The £2000 prize money is nice as well."

Ross will travel to Bochum this weekend to take part in the German Open, which attracts around 1300 entrants. "It’s one of the major events on the European calendar," he said.

He will hope to continue a great run of form which also saw him play a prominent role in Scotland winning the British International Championships two weeks ago, the first time they had done so on home soil for 10 years.
