Darts News – A West Midlands Round Up

Warwickshire’s fourth fixture in the Cosmo Darts Premier Division of the UKDA National League was a home tie with Hampshire at the Hen Lane District and Social Club, 6 Beacon Rd, Coventry CV6 4DS. Going into the game Warwickshire were on seventy-four points from four games and placed eighth in the table while their visitors were fifth with ninety-seven points but from five games.

The weekend got off to a good start with the ladies ‘B’ winning 4-2 and Kacie O’Connor picking up the lady of the match award for her 3-0 win over Cara Rimmer and 21.17 average. The men’s ‘B’ team were held to a 6-6 draw after opening up a 6-3 lead. Man of the match for the men’s ‘B’ was Karl Reynolds who won 4-1 against Andy Mitchell with a 29.67 average.

In Sunday’s games the ladies ‘A’ finished all-square at three each with Wendy Adams topping the averages with her 3-1 win over Sue Power giving her a 20.71 average. With the score now at 13-11 in the home team’s favour, all that was required from the men’s A’ was six winners but they romped to a crushing 10-2 victory, Jamie Hughes winning 4-1 against Dave Bonnett with an award winning average of 30.95.

The 23-13 win for Warwickshire has seen them move up one place in the table to seventh on 100 points to keep within thirty-eight points of leaders Yorkshire and only twenty-five short of second placed Cornwall with a game in hand on five of the six teams above them.

In the L-Style Division One of the UKDA National League West Midlands had what looked to be a tough task as they were lying seventh in the table with eighty-four points and they were traveling to take on the divisional leaders Middlesex who had amassed one hundred points from the same four games as West Midlands.

Saturday was a great day for the Midlanders as the ladies ‘B’ handed out a 5-1 defeat to their counterparts with Hannah Davies their top player as she beat Hayleigh Shaw 3-2 with an 18.93 average. Taking the day’s lead to 13-5 was the men’s ‘B’ as they won 8-4, Ryan O’Connor topping the averages with 29.38 from his 4-1 win over Brandon Pearson.

Sunday was not such a good day as the ladies ‘A’ lost 4-2, Jacqueline Maiden taking the match award for her 3-1 win over Lisa Brosnan and 17.64 average. The men’s ‘A’ also lost finishing on the wrong side of the 7-5 result with Rob Thompson man of the match for his straight 4-0 win against Tim Green giving him a 29.91 average.

Despite the losses on Sunday the overall result for the weekend was a 20-16 win for West Midlands to see them move up three places in the table to fourth with 107 points, just fifteen short of new leaders Clwyd and with a game in hand.

The Four Oaks and District league played their Doubles Knockout down to the last eight pairs at four venues. Winning through at Old Oscott Sports and Social Club were B.Linnecor and A.Kimberley plus P.Locke & D.Parsons while K.Neale and D.Jarvis and K.Shorthouse and S.Paling were the winners at Highcroft Sports Bar, M.Wild and N.Smallwood plus K.Smith and S.Robinson won their way through to finals night at Erdington Club and making up the last eight pairs were D.Chiswell and D.McDermott and N.Sammons and L.Arnold who were the winners at Rosey Mac’s, the winning eight pairs with do battle at the league headquarters, Walmley Sports and Cricket Club on Tuesday 1st July.

The Camp Hill League staged their doubles knout at Erdington Social Club with twenty-five pairs vying for the title. Making their exit in the semi-finals were Neil Parsonage and Riley Mooney (Cotterills Lane EBAHA Club) and Jason Jennings and Darren Wilson (Wakefield Warriors). Taking the title were Dean Harrison and Craig Plaster (Wakefield Warriors) who defeated Sam Robinson and Kevin Smith (Roost Bosh) in the final.

Throughout the evening there were 47 scores of a ton or more, a maximum from Neil Parsonage and a 160 break from Mick O’Sullivan both Cotterills Lane EBAHA Club players.

Sheldon Marlborough Arrows consolidated their number one spot in the Premier League in the Sheldon and District Winter League with a convincing 7-2 home win over EBAHA to keep them six points to the good on Langley Arrows who won 6-3 at Mackadown Sports and Social Club.

There were maximums for Sam Hicks (RAFA), Paul Brown (Sheldon Marlborough Arrows) and Dylan Willcock (EBAHA).

In division one Smithswood Social Club lead the way with eighteen points, both Kevin Lapper and Kian Poyner hitting a 180 for them in their latest 5-4 home win over Sheldon Marlborough Ridge. After the leaders there are three teams all on fourteen points, Old Salts Darts, Langley Flights and Yardley Ex Colts, Sam Robinson notching a 180 for Old Salts Darts.

In division two Sheldon Marlborough Flights had a 7-2 win at Castle Bromwich WMC to see them hold on to pole position with fourteen points from nine games, two more than second placed Moseley Rugby Club who have played ten games the latest of which saw them win 5-4 at Maggies. After the top two comes Lyndon Old Boys and Digby, both on ten points and both having played only eight games.

Game number ten saw no change in the top three places in the Harborne and District League, leaders Northfield Conservative Club remaining top despite having a bye this week, however a 7-2 win away to Windsor Complex has seen Copper Fox ‘R’ go level on points with the leaders and trail them by just three legs of average. Third placed Northfield Darts Club are on eighteen points after their latest 5-4 win at Smethwick Cricket Club.

Finding the three treble twenties this week were D.Latham (Harborne Social), M.Bolton (Weoley Castle WMC), L.Fox (Cock Inn) plus E.Simpson and D.Marsh (Copper Fox ‘R’).

The Kings Norton League are up to game ten and Northfield have stretched their undefeated run to nine games adding a further 5-2 home win over Cock Inn to their account to give them a perfect eighteen points and a four points lead plus a game in hand on second placed Bournebrook who had a close 4-3 win at Stirchley. Third and fourth placed Copper Fox and Bourneville are both two points behind Bournebrook but they both have a game in hand.

There were four 180’s this week, three of them supplied by Stirchley, L.Rooney, M.W£elsh and S.Young, the other came from N.Reynolds (Bourneville).

The South West Birmingham Clubs League played off the quarter-finals of their Percy Hinton Cup in which division one leaders Northfield Darts Club won 6-3 against Northfield Conservative Club ‘A’ from division two. Division two leaders Quarry Club had a memorable 6-3 win over their division one opponents Stirchley United while another division two team Kings Norton Ex Serviceman’s Club also beat their division one rivals Bourenbrook 5-4. No joy for Perfection from division two as they went down 7-2 to Longbridge United who are third in division one.

As early as game four in the Stourbridge and District Monday Night League and only three of the starting line-up of nineteen teams can boast a 100% win record. Glasscutters ‘A’ stay top of the table with a 7-0 win at Rose and Crown ‘B’, second placed Ten Arches remain second after their 6-1 home win over Gigmill. With the top two teams both on an unbeaten eight points there are then six teams all on six points, Gornal British Legion, Five Ways, Old Liberal Club, Bird in Hand, Crestwood and Raven ‘A’, Old Liberal Club the other unbeaten team who have only played three games so far. Not a good week for the Rose and Crown as both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ lost 7-0 in turn to Gornal British legion and Glasscutters ‘A’.

Week five of the John Walters Trophy in the Sedgley and Gornal Tuesday Night League and holding on to the top place in league ‘A’ is New Inn 2 who added a 6-3 home win over Royal to keep them four points better off than Mount Pleasant, Gornal British Legion, Royal, Red Cow and Netherton Sports and Social Club who all have a game in hand on the leaders.

Topping league ‘B’ is Meadow Lark who have won all three of their games so far and had a bye this week. New Inn are second, their 8-1 win at Cabin keeping them ahead of third placed Jolly Crispin on average after they beat Triangle 5-4. Jolly Crispin have a game in hand on New Inn.

In the Netherton Thursday Night 501 League, maximums from M.Rollinson, H.Williams and P.Tonks helped Dudley Ex Serviceman’s Club ‘A’ to a 7-2 home win over British Oak who drop one place in the table to fourth on 24 points, nine fewer than their top of the table victors who have won all eleven games. Old Liberal Club are second on thirty points after handing out a 9-0 whitewash to their visitors Cottage Spring. Making up the top three is Bulls Head who won their home tie with Old Glasshouse 6-3.

Hitting a 180 this week were J.Batham (Old Liberal Club), C.Moreton (British Oak), R.Cox (Rose and Crown) and M.Abbott (Plough and Harrow).

Eighteen teams began the new season in the Rowley Monday Night League and after only the third fixture only three remain undefeated. Gate Hangs Well with maximums from Connor Allan and M.Hall added a 6-3 home win over Romsley Cricket Club to their tally to keep them joint top of the table with Wonder whose 9-0 win at Loyal Lodge puts them level on points and average with Gate Hangs Well. Reigning champions Bell are third, two legs of average behind the top two after their 6-3 win at Tividale Sports. Special mention for Bell’s Trev Brennan who had a 160 break and a maximum 170 finish.

There was an important win for Dudley Ex Serviceman’s Club ‘A’ in the Brierley Hill Monday Night League when they won 6-3 against fifth in the league Roebuck ‘B’, the win keeping intact their eight points lead at the top of the table over second and third placed Maverick and Old Bush, Maverick winning 5-4 at home against Glasshouse ‘A’ and Old Bush winning by the same margin at Roebuck ‘A’. Fourth in the table Bridge once again were 5-4 winners at Dudley Sports ‘A’ to leave them two points short of Maverick and Old Bush but with a game in hand.

A 7-1 win over Carl Zambra has seen Ben Johnson go top of division one in the Gilbert’s Bar Monday Night Singles League with 37 points, second placed, and former leader Simon Mountford won 6-2 against Carl Zambra to put him on the same 37 points as Johnson but with one bonus point fewer.

Reece Cook Lucas stays top of division two despite being held to a 4-4 draw by Andy Mullinder, second placed Richard Brown is two points off the top after he won 5-3 against Michael Franks.

Olly Garratt is already way out in frony in division three with 43 points, second placed Gareth Walsh on 37. Garratt had a 6-2 win over Joanne Meachin while Walsh won by the same 6-2 against Jade Wellings.

After 31 games the same two teams are battling it out for both the singles and doubles leagues in the Wolverhampton Tuesday Night League. In the singles, leaders Junction ‘B’ lost ground in the title race as they suffered what was only their second defeat when they lost 4-3 at Gilbert’s Bar ‘A’. Second placed Hotshots took full advantage to reduce the arrears to just two points by winning 6-1 against New Gate Inn ‘B’.

In the doubles league it’s Junction ‘B’ that top the table again with 58 points, winning 3-0 against Gilbert’s Bar ‘A’, Hotshots matching their rivals 3-0 win in their fixture with New Gate Inn ‘B’ to stay within two points of the leaders.
