Darts News – A West Midlands Round Up By Alan Towe

  Home advantage was not enough for Warwickshire County Darts Organisation to avoid a defeat in their latest fixture in the premier division of the BDO Inter County Championships as they went down 20-16 to Cambridgeshire who as a result have moved up the table two places and replaced Warwickshire in fourth place, while Warwickshire drop to fifth. Saturday’s games got off to a fine start with the ladies ‘B’ winning 5-1 their best result of the season so far. Taking the match award for the ‘B’ side was Chloe McKivett with her fine 20.88 average. The men’s ‘B’ team finished all square at 6-6 with their top player being Graham Hall who had a 29.13 average. Sunday’s results were a different story as the result for the ladies ‘A’ was again 5-1 but this time in favour of Cambridgeshire, Natalie Gilbert the sole winner for the home team with a superb 24.00 average. The men’s ‘A’ had two wins and three draws in their previous outings but for the first time this season they tasted defeat going down 8-4 with Noel Grant winning the match award with his 30.88 average. In division one of the BDO Inter County Championships West Midlands had an away game against bottom of the table Kent and they chalked up their best win of the campaign so far 26-10 to keep them in second place in the promotion table and reduce the arrears on leaders Hampshire to just four points. Both ladies teams had a fantastic weekend with the ‘B’ side winning 6-0 on Saturday and the ‘A’ 5-1 on Sunday with Claire Hobbs (20.88) and Debbie Loon (20,35) taking the respective match awards. It was also a great weekend for the men as again both teams won, the ‘B’ side were 8-4 winners with Daniel Nicholls their top player with a 28.36 average and taking the award for the ‘A’ team was Shaun Carroll with a tremendous 31.19 average in their 7-5 win. Week ten in the Sheldon and District Winter League saw premier division leaders Crown at Olton held to a 4-4 draw away to Mackadown Social who drop one place to third while Crown hold on to pole position with 18 points three more than Langley Hall Sports and Social who take over second place after their 6-2 home win over Pavilions. In division one another Crown, this time Crown Arrows lead the way and hold on to the number one spot despite losing 5-3 away to yet another Crown fifth placed Crown-Forget-me-Not. Crown Arrows now have just a two points lead over their nearest rivals Iron Horse Flights who have a game in hand and also a superior average. There was a somewhat surprising result for third in the table Willclare Sports and Social as they were held to a 4-4 draw at East Birmingham Allotment Holders Association who are third from bottom. With no result in for the Highwood Exiles versus Shirley RBL Misfits fixture a 4-4 draw by Ridgemere Social with Maggies has seen Ridgemere replace Misfits at the top of the table, both teams are on 15 points with Misfits having only eight results in as to Ridgemere’s nine. Highlight of the Ridgemere encounter was the perfect SIX darts game by S.Hoccum who broke with 160 and checked out on 141. It was the semi finals of the Divisional Cups week in the South Birmingham League and in the division one game’s there were wins for the division’s top two sides as leaders Erdington Members Club won 6-3 against The Trident and with the same scoreline second in the table Mackadown Social beat Banbury Arrows. Leaders of division two, The Gate handed out a 7-2 defeat to The C’s while in the middle of the table clash between Banbury Flights and The Dog it was the former who got the close 5-4 verdict. The Forest of Arden Winter League staged round two of their Pairs Cup which saw Highwood Arms and Highwood KB hand out massive 15-0 defeats to respective opponents Highwood Exiles and Crown Arrows. There was a 10-5 win for division two leaders Journeys End Flights against Greville Arrows but division one leaders Journeys End suffered a shock 8-7 defeat at the hand of the Ivy Leaf team who are third in the division one league table and some eight points behind Journeys End. In week fourteen of the Four Oaks and District League The Boat, leaders of division one had a bye and second placed Boldmere St Mike’s took full advantage to reduce the arrears to just two points by handing out a 9-0 whitewash to their hosts Pint Pot Flights. The top two teams will now square up to teach other in the final fixture of the season in what will effectively be a title decider. Golden Hind beat Old Oscott Arrows 6-3 and are in third place while Plough and Arrows with only their second win in thirteen games doubled their points tally with a 6-3 win against Old Oscott WMC. In the second division St Thomas’s Social Club lost the opening two matches of the season but have not lost since as they continued their run with a 7-2 success at Boldmere Tap to maintain their two points lead over The Boot who had a bye this week. Erdington Club in a local derby with Erdington Arrows had a close 5-4 win. W.Cadby hit his second 180 of the season for St Thomas’s Social Club. Hillyfields ‘B’ made it eight wins in as many games in the Kings Norton League when they won their home tie with Cotteridge Social 6-1 giving them a total of 16 points. Second placed West Heath had a close 4-3 win away to fourth in the table Stirchley United to put them on the same 16 points as the leaders but from nine games. Hillyfields ‘A’ like their ‘B’ team also won 6-1 in an away fixture at Billesley to put them on 12 points together with Stirchley United, both teams four adrift of the leading duo. Rubery Social are in fifth position and like the two Hillyfield teams also won 6-1 at home to Bear and Staff. This coming Sunday (26th February) the Small Heath League will be holding their AGM at the Emerald Club, Green Lane, Small Heath, Birmingham, anyone interested in entering a team, old or new in the league for the forthcoming season should attend this meeting which will get underway at 11.00am.
The Small Heath League and the Gulp Charity Team played each other in a Bill Harvey Charity Match at the Emerald Club and the evening raised a fabulous £256.
The Sheldon Marlborough Cricket Club Singles League is in its second week and of the thirteen starters only three of them remain with a 100% record. Dave Humphries heads the table adding 3-0 wins over Ian Genge and Alan Wale to give him a perfect eight points from his first four fixtures. Second placed Paul Sunner is also unbeaten taking his tally to four points from two games with a 3-0 win against Steve McCarthy. The other player to have won all of his games so far is Neil Rughani who after one game, in which he beat Marie Jenkins 3-0 is currently placed fourth. The Camp Hill League staged their Ladies Knockout and lifting the winners crown with a final success over Gloria Lightwood (Devil’s Club) was Danielle Whitmore from Wagon and Horses. Losing in the last four were Karen Dempsey (Wagon and Horses) and Jacqui Francis (Station Wagon). Ten Arches ‘B’ took their unbeaten run in the Stourbridge and District Monday Night League to six games as they added the week’s biggest scoreline of 8-1 over Fox Inn (Lye) to their total to remain the only team in the 24 team league to have won all six of their games. Local rivals Ten Arches ‘A’ are second two points behind their ‘A’ team after winning 7-2 at Quarry Bank Conservative Club, then comes four more teams, Brickmakers Arms, Gate ‘B’, Bird (Stourbridge) and The Cross (Oldswinford) all on the same eight points as Ten Arches ‘A’. Riley’s Solihull staged their UK Open Qualifier which attracted in excess of 70 top players culminating in a nail biting nine legs thriller between Chris Stokes and Kevin Bambrick, the close 5-4 verdict eventually going to Bambrick.
