Darts News – Alan Towe’s The Line On Darts – Clwyd v Shropshire

With one win and one defeat in their opening two fixtures in division four of the BDO Inter County Championships, Shropshire’s third fixture was an away game against Clwyd, but unfortunately it didn’t turn out too well.
The ladies ‘B’, like the county had recorded one win and one defeat, this was to be their second defeat as the home side romped to a 5-0 lead. Tracey Jones began the rout with her 3-0 win over Samantha Roberts. Then came a run of four 3-1 results with Rita Carus, Jayne Andrews, Sandra Rule and Joanne Toye in turn defeating Pamela Evans, Jane Vernon, Marie Riggs and Suzanne Lane.
Keeping their best till last Shropshire chalked up their one and only winner when Kirsty Jenks (11.08) beat Julie Maddock 3-1 and take the match award in the process. The final score 5-1 to Clwyd.
The men’s ‘B’ side took the lead no fewer than four times, but in the end had to be satisfied with a 6-6 draw. Matt Williams (Shropshire) was first on against Danny Tinney and won 3-1, only to see Ryan Craddock record the same result against Martin Riggs to level the match.
Roger Taylor was the next player to give the away side the lead when he accounted for Andrew Cummins, with yet another 3-1 scoreline. Shropshire then opened up a two games buffer when Glen McGrandle beat Dave Roberts in three straight legs with an award winning average 27.33.
The lead was short lived as Nadeem Mohammed won 3-0 against Mark Tirrell and Mark Howcroft beat Scott Pitchford 3-2 to take the score to 3-3.
For a third time Shropshire went ahead, a 3-1 win from John Breeze over Mick Jones the difference between the two teams until Neil Ulke levelled the match for a third time with his 3-0 win against Antony Stoneman.
Game nine and Les Marson was the man to give the visitors their fourth advantage as he won a close 3-2 battle with Steve Gierke.
Two 3-0 wins from Phillip Wilcock and Paul Hughes against respective opponents Daniel Petty and Daniel Astbury saw Clwyd take the lead for the first time in the game and put them within one game of victory. Fortunately for Shropshire John Cornwell was in good form in the final game as he beat Steven Elison 3-1 to see the two teams share the 6-6 result.
Sunday’s ladies game was better, but only just as opener Lorna Wheatley and anchor lady Debbie Davies were the only two winners. Lorna Wheatley taking the lady of the match award with her 15.87 average in a 4-2 win for Clwyd.
The men’s ‘A’ still seeking their first win of the campaign lost the opening four games to Peter Lewis, Craig Billingsley, Darren Hiles and Jason Wilcock, with three of the four games going to a deciding leg.
John Cooper and Clive Lucking kept Shropshire in the match, in turn beating Christopher Doody 4-3 and Paul Alley 4-2.
Clive Rule took the score to 5-2 in Clwyd’s favour when he beat Eddie Austin 4-1and although Danny James (24.14) laid on an award winning performance in his 4-3 win over Paul Rielly it was the hosts who took the final three games to win the game 9-3 and give Clwyd an overall 24-12 victory.
The win saw Clwyd move up the table to third with 67 points, while Shropshire are seventh some 1nineteen points behind them.
