Darts News – Alan Towe’s The Line On Darts – Derbyshire v Wiltshire
Saturday was a great day with Derbyshire only dropping three games from the eighteen played for the two teams. The ladies romped to a 5-0 lead, Lauren Jackson (19.88) for the third consecutive game winning the lady of the match award when she opened up with a 3-1 win over Erica Hartnett. Rachel Ayres doubled the lead with a straight 3-0 win over Jamie Wilson, before Lynda Gilbert made sure of at least a share of the spoils when she won 3-1 against Kimberley Doble.
The win was confirmed in the very next game, Nicola Fletcher winning 3-2 in her tie with Jill Little to take the score along to 4-0. Making it 5-0 was Samantha Clarke, a 3-1 success over Freda Squires before Wiltshire recorded their one and only winner Sue Lane, her 3-2 win over Dee Fenn, after Fenn had levelled at 2-2 from 2-0 down put the final score at 5-1 to the hosts.
The men’s ‘B’ made it a straight three wins for the campaign with a tremendous 10-2 victory. Like the ladies ‘B’ game they stormed into a 5-0 lead, Wayne Pepper started the run when he beat Nick Budgen 3-1 after Budgen had won the first leg, then came three clear cut 3-0 wins from Robert Smith, Tim Daniels and Lee Stanley, who in turn accounted for Stuart Maundrell, Alan Enstone and Jeff Fowler.
The fifth winning game was put up by man of the match John Clifford, a superb 29.16 average in his 3-1 defeat of Michael Duggan.
To round off the first half of the game Wiltshire got their first win on the board, a 3-1 success by Andrew McAllister over Daniel Thomas after Thomas had won the opening leg.
Beginning the second half with a 5-1 lead, Derbyshire were quick to add to that scoreline as Dean Wilkins, after leading 1-0 and trailing 2-1 to Matt Harris went on to win 3-2 and with a similar pattern of play Alan Statham beat Kevin Barefoot to put the score beyond Wiltshire at 7-1.
A straight 3-0 win from Robert Wood over Roy Pryor made it 8-1 and adding a further win for the home team was Tony Cresswell with his 3-2 against Richie Ettwell.
In the penultimate encounter Wiltshire chalked up their second winner, Bob Phillips winning 3-1 against Adrian Asprey, but the final score was 10-2 to Derbyshire when Colin Rich won the final game against Jon House 3-2 to maintain the ‘B’ teams winning run, taking it to three wins from three games.
The ladies ‘A’ were in top form, emulating their ‘B’ team with a 5-1 win. The reliable Joanne Oldershaw was on first with a confident 3-0 win over Shirley Castle. Following Joanne was Sara-Jane Harrison, who despite losing the opening leg to Tracy Smith came back to win 3-1.
Two time award winner Jane Densley made it three lady of the match awards when she added her 3-0 win over Stacey Day to the tally, Jane’s average, a superb 22.43. Another straight legs win from Rachel Bird against Linzi Holton took the score along to 4-0 and out of the visitors reach.
Joanna Hooke pulled one back for the away side in the fifth, but the final score went to 5-1 when Jackie Sweet beat Jaine Telling 3-1 in the last game.
The combined score of the two ladies games and the men’s ‘B’ meant that without adding the men’s ‘A’ result Derbyshire had already won the game as their lead was 20-4. Nevertheless a win is what the men’s ‘A’ were after and a win is what they got.
The game began with Paul Mellor (27.20) going 2-0 down to Anthony Moulden and then fighting back in 23, 18 and 2x16 darts games to win the game 4-2 and in the process the match award. Reece Spurr doubled the lead with a clear cut 4-0 victory over Paul Oakley.
There was then a slight setback as Adi Acott, Matthew Aubrey and Lee Evans reversed the advantage to give Wiltshire a 3-2 lead.
Rounding off the first half of the game Paul Baker (Derbyshire) was made to fight all the way in a very close encounter with Paul Boulton. After going 1-0 up Baker was twice pegged back to level terms, but with a 94 outshot went 3-2 up and then with his opponent on 32, he produced a tremendous 143 game shot to win 4-2 and level the game at 3-3.
Wiltshire went ahead again in the second half opener, Dave Wicks beating Jim Beardmore 4-1, but it was then Derbyshire all the way as they won the last five games to clinch an 8-4 win. Providing the wins were, Paul Bettney, Drew Smith, Nigel Daniels, David Smith-Hayes and Gary Fenn.
The huge 28-8 win takes Derbyshire into pole position in the promotional table with 81 points, five more than former leaders Sussex, who beat West Midlands 21-15.
