Lakeside dream is over for local aces

The Lakeside World Championship dream failed to turn into reality for two local throwers yesterday.

Newborough resident Paul Crawford fell at the first hurdle in Group 3 of the International Play-Offs in Bridlington when going down to Warwickshire player Nigel Heydon.

Fenland ace Steve Roberts, of Marshland St James, was beaten in a Group 12 semi-final against Paul Brookes of Worcestershire.

A third Cambridgeshire county player, Paul Newstead also went out in a board semi-final in Group 3 to Dutchman Rick Hofstra.

Crawford returns to the Bridlington oche tomorrow to line up in the Winmau World Masters for the second successive year. Market Deeping maestro and defending champion Martin Adams enters the big tournament on Saturday at the last 16 stage.
