PDC Worlds Expand to add Women Qualifiers

Could Red Dragon’s World Champion Lisa Ashton be Next to Take on the Men?

Four-times Ladies Lakeside World Champion Lisa Ashton could soon be rubbing shoulders with the elite players of professional darts on the World Stage. This is following the PDC’s announcement to add two female qualification spots to the William Hill World Championships. The introduction of 24 further qualifiers will see the field increase to 96 competitors, with additional professionals joining an expanded group of international qualifiers which will include two female contenders. The 2018/19 event will also have a record £2.5 million prize fund with a massive £500,000 going to the winner. This huge announcement has given the ladies of darts a further opportunity to play on biggest stage and mix with the top male stars of the sport. There have been previous ventures in the past for Ladies to break into the PDC with limited success, including the PDC Women’s World Championship in 2010,that was won by Stacy Bromberg. The BDO Ladies tour has done a fantastic job of developing the female game over recent years and has seen the standard of ladies darts rise dramatically. The increase in places for professional tour players and international qualifiers also provides an even greater incentive than before for players to hit the practice board.
