The Boss Strikes Back with New Darts
Ross “The Boss” Montgomery lifted the prestigious Dutch Open Men’s title for the second time in his career last night, where the Scotsman dispatched Brian Raman 3-1 in the final armed with his new arrows.
This was title number two of the evening for Ross, after he also won the Men’s pairs title with darts legend Martin Adams. The two long-time friends teamed up and faced Colin Roelofs and Ryan de Vreede in the final, where they battled to a 5-4 victory.
This double win was the perfect debut for a new set of blue PVD-coated darts that Montgomery revealed at De Bonte Wever.
Montgomery said “I was disappointed with my display at the Worlds and felt that there was a few extra percent in my game that I just didn’t show, so I had a really good chat with the engineers at Red Dragon shortly after and we bounced around some ideas about changing the feel of the dart in my hand.”
Ross’ barrels feature a unique scallop profile at the front half where he grips the dart, something that is rarely seen on professional players darts.
“The grip and profile at the front has been custom-fit for my grip style and I fell in love with it as soon as I started practicing with them. I was looking to keep the same shape and weight, but slightly adjust the grip feel on the front to try and give my game a boost.”
“The guys at Red Dragon suggested I try a PVD coating which not only gave the dart a beautiful face-lift, but more importantly it gave me a slightly higher grip level and different feel, without completely changing the grip’s characteristics. As soon I got my first few throws in I could feel the difference and it was exactly what I was looking for.”
The Dutch Open is the largest open darts tournament in the World with over 5000 darts players participating and is renowned as one of the most gruelling events on the tour to win.
“Well I could hardly ask for a better start with these darts!” said an elated Montgomery “There’s no tournament in the World that is as testing as the Dutch Open, it’s a two-day slog that really separates the men from the boys and puts your endurance to the test. To win it for the second time is a massive career highlight for me and now I just cannot wait to push on through the rest of the tour”.
Simon Hall Head of Marketing said “Ross has been battling away on the WDF World Tour for decades and it’s great to see him win the worlds largest open and get to WDF World No.1 - all with a new set of darts less than a week ago!”
