A Look Back in time - 03.08.05
It was not a night for the Bournbrooks in division two of the South West Birmingham Clubs Summer League as both Arrows and Flights finished on the wrong side of close 4-3 defeats. Not only did they both lose by the odd game, but by losing the very last game of their respective matches. Arrows went down to Longbridge 26’ers and Flights lost to Tascos Social. In the same division Nigel Loat (Longbridge United) hit a maximum as his side lost 5-2 at Yardley Wood.
In the first division one, Perfection did not quite live up to their name as they travelled to Stirchley United WMC and returned on the sharp end of a 7-0 whitewash. Another team to suffer a similar fate were division three’s Bartley Green who lost 7-0 at Northfield Conservative Club, while Moseley Cricket Club gained a very creditable 4-3 success over Shenley Lane.

As the Brookmeadow Individual League reaches the midway point of the season nothing changes at the top of the table as leader Mark Birch made it fourteen wins in fifteen games with a 3-0 success over Andy Smith and second in the table Robbie Earl beat David Elkin 3-0 to keep the margin between the two players at four points, the league have also been engaged in the first round of their singles knockout. Highlights of the round saw a 180 from Mark Birch in his 3-1 win against Gareth Lomas, a 118 finish from Bill Cadby in a similar 3-1 victory over Terry Blakemore and a 114 checkout by Keith Kelly as he defeated David Elkin, once again 3-1. Other players to win through to round two are Robbie Earl, Andy Smith, Mark Showering, Paul Smith and Pete Stevens.

With the Mitre already having sewn up the Small Heath League title the battle is on between Victoria 301 Club and Custard House for the runners up spot. Mitre’s 6-3 win over Gunmakers Arms was immaterial, but the two chasing teams squared up to each other on the Custard House board. Despite home advantage the Custard House went down 5-4 and as a result the two teams are now locked on 28 points each, but more importantly Custard House have lost their number two spot to the victors, trailing by just two legs of average.
The league have shown that you do not have to have dry sunny weather or even a perfectly mown grass area on which to play cricket as they have introduced into their itinerary a “Darts Cricket Knockout”. Their new competition has proved to be a huge success. Winning their way through to the semi-finals are Mitre Gang (Mitre), Big Al’s All Stars (Custard House), Blanks (Gunmakers Arms) and The Outsiders (Ward End Ex Service Club). The semi’s and final will be played on the 16th August.
Another reminder, the Small Heath League will be holding their AGM at the league headquarters, Custard House, Blake Lane, Birmingham on Sunday 14th August at 11.00am. Anyone interested in entering a team should atten this meeting, or for any further information contact John Young on either 07973-228210 or 07834-049457
