A Look Back In Time - 11.05.2005

Each week the positions change in the Brookmeadow Individual League, everyone that is except the number one position, which has been held by Robbie Earl since the season began some eighteen games ago.

This week Robbie played against Dave Elkin and Paul Hogan and chalked yet another two straight 3-0 wins to give him a total of 78 points. Keith Kelly has now taken over second place but is a massive 15 points adrift of Earl. In his two games Kelly took on Ben Wilkins and Terry Blakemore and in similar fashion he had two 3-0 wins. Wilkins now remains the only player in the league without a win so far.

John Whitehouse was the only player to hit a maximum this week.

The Small Heath League has been engaged in their Doubles Knockout, which attracted a tremendous 75% of the league’s players, which is a wonderful turnout. The eventual winners were Arthur Forde and John McCaffrey who represented the Innisfree (Red Devils). Beaten finalists were Darren Brown and Kevin Moloney from the Custard House, while the losing semi-finalists were Paul Wilding and John Comer (McVeighs) plus Neil Parsonage and his partner John Hudson from the Gunmakers Arms.

Making their exits in the last eight were, Brendon Lysaght / Trevor Frost (Mitre), Sheila Carter / John Young (Innisfree), John Miley / Martin Cooper (Ward End Ex Service Club), Chris Stokes / Mick O’Sullivan (Victoria 301 Club).

Three games were played in the G.U.L.P. Charity League this week and all three finished with 6-1 margins. Red Devils went down at home to Victoria 301 Club, as did Red Lion in their fixture with Tigers. C.Wyatt was in top scoring form for the Tigers hitting 105, 137,120b,140 and 3x100. Hardy Spicer were the league’s only team to take full benefit out of their home advantage as they defeated Malt Shovel.

Red Lion ’A’ provided the shock result in division one of the Tamworth Cue Sports League as they travelled to table toppers Globe and beat them 5-3. Second placed Dolphin played against their nearest rivals Two Gates Club and the match ended all square at 4-4. However, a draw was enough for Dolphin to knock the Globe out of pole position and take over the number one spot.

In the second division the top two teams, Cue Sports Club and Mercian both recorded 5-3 wins. Both teams had home games and in turn beat Pretty Pigs and Boot (Grendon). Third in the league table Kettlebrook were unable draw any comfort from their home advantage as Three Horse Shoes beat them 6-2.

Markley (Globe) and M. Wiseman (Pretty Pigs) both notched a maximum.

I was saddened to hear recently of the death of Harry Thompson. For many, many years Harry was a regular darts player around the Black Country especially in the Dudley, Gornal and Pensnett areas. He was a top player when I first started to play darts and I feel proud to have played alongside him in numerous league teams and cup competitions. Harry Thompson was a true gentleman and a credit to the sport of darts.
