A LOOK BACK IN TIME -26.01.2005

Warwickshire trek north to take on mighty Yorkshire in their fifth of nine premier division games in the BDO Kaliber Inter Counties Championship turned out to be a weekend of mixed fortunes. The ladies teams both finished all square at three each. The inimitable Trina Gulliver with a fabulous 30.06 average took the ’A’ side match award, while for the ’B’ it was Betty Sinnett (19.32).  However, the men’s results were a different affair. Both finished on the wrong side of an 8-4 verdict giving an overall result of 22-14 in favour of the hosts, making it two defeats in a row for Warwickshire. Collecting the trophies for the respective ’A’ and ’B’ best games were Mark Holyoake (29.42) and Mick Gorst (26.40).

Meanwhile, in the third division West Midlands were recording their second win of the campaign, mainly down to their ’A’ teams. On Saturday the men lost 7-5 and the ladies 4-2, but they got their act together on Sunday when the men won 9-3 and the ladies 5-1 giving them a 21-15 success.

Match awards went to Chris Hickman (28.34 ’A’), Ian Hartland (26.84 ‘B‘), Angie Perry (20.62 ’A’) and Claire Downing (20.04 ’B’).

Cup games were in the fixture card for the Sheldon and District Winter League. First round two of the Punchbowl in which the biggest winners were Fordbridge Social, who with a 180 from A.Grainger handed out a 9-0 whitewash to Sheldon Dukes. Joining Fordbridge in the hat for the draw for round three will be, Old Bill and Bull, Three Horse Shoes, Highwood, Iron Horse, Saltley Amateur Gardeners, Shard End RBL and Castle Vale Residents Association.

The tie between Millhouse and Shard End RBL Flights in the preliminary round of the Sheldon Shield was very close, with Flights just getting the 5-4 edge.

It was also a cup week in the Four Oaks and District League. Both of the Brian Goodman semi-finals ended in a 7-2 scoreline. Old Oscott Arrows beat Hill Social and although D.Fletcher hit a maximum for his team, Old Oscott WMC, they still went out of the competition to Yenton Exiles.

There was a close 5-4 win for the Leopard over Pint Pot in the last four of the Ken Rust Cup, while Hardy Spice really hit top form against Barn Social as they romped to an 8-1 victory. For Hardy Spicer A.Bath and T.Tyrie both chalked up 160 breaks, and there was also a nine darts game for Tyrie.

There are no fewer than four teams with six points at the top of the Small Heath League, Ward End Ex Service Club, Victoria 301 Club, Mitre and Custard House. Ward End Ex Service suffered their first defeat of the campaign when they lost 6-3 at the Mitre. Victoria 301 Club won 8-1 at the Wagon and Horse to put them dead level on both points and average with Ward End to share the number one spot. Another away team, Custard House, won 6-3 at Innisfree. Both the Mitre and Custard House have the advantage of a game in hand on the other two teams.

The top two teams in the Forest of Arden Winter League did battle this week. Leaders Red Arrows travelled to take on their nearest rivals Mackadown Sports and Social, who were just two points behind them. Despite some high scoring, especially from R.Heaven, who hit 3x100, 105, 125 and 140, the home side finished as 6-3 losers and with seven games to play have seen Red Arrows open up a four points lead for the title.

In the other matches there were 5-4 wins for Harvester and Sheldon Heath Social, who in turn defeated Farringdon Social and Greville Arrows. Better news for the other Greville team, Greville Arms, they had a 6-3 win at Sheldon Ivy Leaf.
